"remember the gyrations Subaru did with the Brat to get it to be a "truck"?"

Actually (IIRC), the Brat had jump seats welded in the bed to qualify it as
a car, which made for a lower import duty...

The rise of such instances is why the EPA/DOT (one or the other, or
both) have at least started thinking about changing requirements for
light trucks to be the same as for cars. To many people use light trucks
(3/4 ton pickups and under) for regular passenger conveyance. Ask some
truck owners to haul something for you (say a washing machine you just
bought) and they'll have a fit! "Not in my 440K truck -- might scratch
the plastic bed liner, and I'd have to unfasten the tonneau cover too!!"
I think it would be a great change, say anything under 10K GVW (a 3/4
ton pickup would weigh at least 6K -- 4K or so of truck, 1.5K payload,
and an extra 500 lbs of passengers) regardless of type meets the same
EPA/DOT standards. With today's technology there isn't a lot of
difference in power output like there used to be.

Unfortunately it all depends on your location and needs of those nearby.
Don't recall your location Joe, but Doc's near NYC. Mark posted his 258
on the Strokers list in the hopes someone looking for a crank and rods
would want it. One person asked for the exact location, and I sent him
an e-mail with Doc's e-mail address and told him to contact him
directly.

AMCers are spread a bit thin across the country, unfortunately! The
further out in the boonies cars are on e-bay, the less they bring,
whereas those close to populated areas, even in worse condition, often
go for more than one would expect. Hard to ship parts, such as engines,
are the same. No one seems to realize a 343 is a high comp engine that
will produce as much or more power than a low comp 360 -- they just see
the size. Or maybe they do and running on lower grade fuel is more
important...

Funny one of the things I like about my Dakota is I can actually haul stuff with it and the mileage [in town at least] is the same as the S10! At least I now know what the S stands for! But I won't say here as then I'd have to wipe up the mess.
The MOPAR Canvas look cover on it is the easiest one one I've ever used. It rolls up in a few seconds and reinstalls just as quick.

A: That would be @'91 and newer. Prior to that, the Dana 35 XJ axle (which
shares the center section with Model 15) has the style where the backing
plate holds the axle in. It's tougher to tell in car but if the whole
differential is out of the car, you can see the axle tube is larger diameter
at the backing plate to fit the bearing on earlier rigs ('84 to 08/90 and
maybe more) I never got around to checking to see if the early XJ axles
would swap with Eagle axles.
I do know you can bolt the whole XJ rear diff into an Eagle (I've done it
twice) but the shock mounts need to be cut off and repositioned. If you keep
an eye out for a parts Comanche, you may even find a D44 or Model 20 (you'll
need shock mounts and new spring pads welded on to bolt it in)

Just slip the axle right back in. You may have to rotate it once
it's in
to line the splines up, but that's all. Nothing else was
supposed to
come loose or out with it. Don't know what Russ was talking
about as far
as loosening the caps in the differential. May be required on a
different design, but all the AMCs I've pulled just come right
out after
a good tug. Once you get the axle splines lined up (it will
slide in a
little more) you sill probably have to put a block of wood
across the
end of the axle and give it a couple whacks to seat it.
Loosening the
caps as Russ suggested might make the axles pull out/push in
easier, but
it's not necessary.

The only exception is the late model Cherokee axles -- they have
C-clips
in the diff that hold the axles in, the backing plates don't.
C-clip
axles require the diff cover to come off and the clips removed.

another clue you could see in the car: the c-clip axles have 9" drums;
earlier were 10". [btw same 10 x 1.75" drums as amc v8s back to '73]

i've heard that just as some early xjs came with amc15 axles, some
late eagles had d35s - from the factory.

the xj axle is wider than the usual hornet/concord one, but both xjs
and eagles use those deep-offset wheels.

i'd like to see an exemption for tradesmen - contractors, plumbers,
electricians, etc - but not for all small owner businesses - lawyers
or realtors for example. give folks who -need- a work truck a break.

That's discrimination. We can't have any
discrimination among trade groups. This is America.
Just try excluding lawyers from anything, especially
any kind of perk. And realtors? Surely you jest.

While it's certain that some people are flakes, it's hard to
haul around and repair 600 lb motors in your yard.

It's tough out there. If I had more space, I'd keep more things
like that, and also not have to worry about getting rid of stuff.
I think the problem is everyone is in the same boat; a lot of
stuff, and space is unfortunately becoming more expensive.

(High real estate prices kill actual culture; nearly
all of the informal clubs, collective projects, cafes and
project-oriented group households I knew in San Francisco in
the 1980's died/closed up due to 10X real estate prices, just
for one example.)

I pass up things I'd want/need, only to find a year or two or
three later I'm hunting for that very thing. Usually the reason
is space; I just can't keep enough stuff.

Engines are large and heavy, greasy and dirty, but they
deteriorate stored outside even covered. It makes it harder.

I have only three engines stored here, two outside. They're
greased, but surface rust is growing. I'm thinking of tearing
them down into parts (they're all once-running rebuild cores) so
I can store cranks etc inside and greased/wrapped blocks outside,
but that runs into the other precious commodity -- time :-)

It's not even a money issue; I'd "packrat" stuff just because
it's useful to someone, and trade/give away/sell at cost to
fellow AMCers.

I feel your frustration!

D'oh, you're right, me talk backwards, but that's what I meant --
import trucks were tarriffed, so the the Brat had seats jammed
in back to make it a "car". Talk about gamesmanship!

Frank the guy that was looking for a 258 for his Matador was willing to
drive a 3 hour radius of NYC. I am 5 miles north of the Bronx NYC line.
I posted to the list and also to the personal E-Mail addy that was
posted for the guy. Not a peep in 5 days. I realize that parts are
getting hard to come by, especially a good running engine which is why I
hate to send it to the dump. But such is life. 5 years ago I had 2 doors
with glass, a hood and a hatch with glass for an 82 Spirit and 2
bumpers. I couldn't get 200$ for the whole lot. A Spirit drag racer from
New Jersey needed a door. I at the time I needed room in my garage. I
would not just sell one door. He took everything for 200$. I am in the
same position now. I am looking to save 113$ a month for a rented
storage space and the parts I need for my Hornet's to come home to my
garage. My son's Javelin will be gone soon so both Hornet's can be
garaged. Over the years I have collected spare sheet metal parts for my
cars. I have 2 spare doors, a spare hood, 2 NOS front fenders, front and
rear bumpers and all sorts of small parts. I am currently waiting for
another Hornet Hatchback to be parted out at the end of the month so I
can hopefully buy the hatch and 2 rust free front fenders. Like Eddie
Stakes says you will never see these parts re-po'd so in case of an
accident I have replacements.

So a big thank you to Jack for bringing the Charity AMX to Michigan.
I've got the car and tonight we begin to inspect and catalog. Upon
cursory inspection it looks like we've got some good stuff and a lot of
things we are going to need. As for the condition I'll post pictures etc
soon.

There is (how do I say this.....) ummmmmmmm.... A GREAT DEAL of work to
be done to have the car at a saleable point. I expected that so at this
point we are exactly on track. LOL
