Frank said - >I have to tell you, I'm, pissed off at the mid west AMC
enthusiasts in general.>

Frank, this wasn't very nice of you and I feel you should apologize to
the mid-west AMC'ers. I know a lot of them have done work on the car,
donated cash and items for it, and even some of them didn't get credit
for their efforts. Namdra has done several articles on the car, donated
to it, helped getting donations and publicity for it at the big Kenosha
meet and I was going to try and get Steve Schall (now passed) to do some
work on it but it ended up in DeLabio's hands and in the Zion body shop.
I would be willing to do another article on it in NAMDRA's newsletter to
help get the project done if the mess it now sounds like on the list and
forum is straightened out.

Hello all! I'm looking at getting an a-b type car for not much money, and I
found a 1988 Eagle Premier ES for sale.

The problems are a burnt-out "air compressor clutch" and a driver's seat
belt buckle that needs to be replaced. Is this "air compressor clutch" a
part to the air conditioning? Is the vehicle otherwise driveable with this
problem until I would get it fixed?

Apparently, the car has all service records since new and has 140k on the
clock. I've owned an AMC before and used to be a regular on this list about
5 years ago. If anyone can provide me some advice, that'd be great.

Thanks,

Rhett

Getting the work done was difficult, but I managed...

The gasket I bought was a Mopar 4295875-AC. It was 12.69 + tax. It
fits plenty of AMCs and Chryslers (among other cars).

A picture of the gasket (or at least the shape of the pan) can be found
here:
http://images.wrenchead.com/smartpages/partinfo_resize/FEL/TOS18667_TOP.jpg

Applications can be found here:
http://wrenchead.carparts.com/servlets/whGetBuyersGuidePage30?Reference=jcw-carparts35~ref&PartNumber=TOS%2018667&PartTypeId=2745&CatalogId=456

The information was found on CarParts.Com.

sounds like it - i don't know what other air compressor the car would
have. a/c compressors definitely have electric clutches; that's how
they cycle on and off.

if it isn't seized you should be able to unplug it and just have no
a/c. of course if it's burned out it may be functionally 'unplugged'
already...

two notes you might be interested in:
1. if you ever need tranny svc and have a hard time, it's a zf also
used in some fwd volvos, in the '80s/'90s at least.
2. the 'prv' [peugeot-renault-volvo] v6 line was supposedly sold to
hyundai who improved on its reliability. this would probably only
be worth following up if you ever need major engine work or a
   transplant.

i was gonna guess the original app was jeep wranglers. they used the
tf999/32rh/32re into the 2000s. 4-cyl cherokees used the aw4 '87-'93?
but i've been told they used the tf904/30rh both before -and-after-,
until their end in '99.

Interesting thread. Something not mentioned here however is what is called
'charity fatigue' though. This is a interesting report out of all places,
Minnesota:
http://www.kare11.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=110475
Since the Charity AMX project was started however as mentioned above link,
there have been a mess of monster tragedies all over world, and many here in
US that have happened from the attack of September 11th, to Hurricanes
Katrina, Rita and Wilma for instance.

This link below is a good example with many suffering donor fatigue:
http://www.poynter.org/column.asp?id=2&aid=90557

With many here in Houston is is simply Katrina fatigue:
http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm/bay/content.view/cpid/340.htm

Charity is charity whether in the form of a donation of clothes, money,
food, or your time to help others. There is a good long list of businesses,
individuals, clubs that have donated time, money, effort, sweat, parts, and
other to make this Charity AMX a reality:
http://www.mattsoldcars.com/charityamx/

Yes, it has taken longer than is was supposed to. So have projects like the
Big Dig! But on the Matt's Old cars link showing sponsors, that is rather
impressive and note that the sponsors list was last updated April 2004, 29
months ago. There have been a lot of people donate and work on the car that
are NOT listed on that list either!

I may add while this project is not really in limbo, but sort of like a set
of AMC vacuum wipers, slow, there have been a number of AMC things that have
cratered along the way: whole chapters, AMC Magazine, AMCWC, and neat ideas
that well, never happened like AMC Unity Club, AMC Council, AMCforum.net
(which is back online), but there have been a number of AMC related
fatalities along the old AMC road since Charity AMX was launched. We
(AMCers) should be grateful to all who have taken a small part of their
time, effort, know how, money, anything 'donated' to this cause however.
While it still has a way to go, most projects do. And even more so if being
done by nothing but people who are volunteering.

I hope this don't become a pissing war about who did what, when and who
donated this and that. The last thing it would need is a Red Cross fiasco
stigmatizing it, whereas those who may want to donate, would not.

Rhett,

I just changed the A/C compressor clutch on my 96 Ram last weekend. It
wasn't that bad of a job (it took me about 3 hours, an hour of which was
getting the pulley off). It would have gone much faster if A) I had a
wrench the right size to get the fan off the engine so I could get the fan
shroud out of the way (a problem you're not going to have) and B) the
puller I rented from AutoZone had deep enough jaws to fit on the pulley
(it's on there with a light press fit). I also rented a clutch holding tool
which worked great for the old clutch but not for the new one (this also
added time to the work). The only other special tool I needed was a pair of
snap ring pliers. The only really bad part of the job was not being able to
get the part from anyone except a dealer and it was $219 plus tax.

All this being said, I would try and find out what exactly it will take to
fix this. Being that the car in question is front wheel drive, the
compressor could be in an evil place. Also, my experience was with a Sanden
R-134a compressor which is most likely not what's on this car.

Well, the Premier has a longitudinally-mounted engine. It's not transverse,
like most FWD cars. So it might not be in that evil of a place. However, if
I get the car, I will hunt high and low to find a manual on it so that I can
repair whatever's reasonable myself.

Does anybody know how possible a 4.0 conversion is? Since the car has
absolutely no value at all, when I get enough dough to play with it, I might
try to turn it into a more proper AMC by changing out the Eagle badges for
AMC ones, and maybe putting Concord or Ambassador emblems on it,
and installing a 4.0 would be nice. I'd probably try to find some '91-92
taillights as well because I like them better.

But that's IF I get this car, and IF I ever see fit to play around with it.
Just thoughts bouncing around in my head.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Peace,

Rhett

I have to say, I don't know much of the history around
this car like what charity are the proceeds going to?
What started the cause? What stage is the car at? Is
it painted or not? From what I know, it has been here
in the Kenosha area for a few years now (Zion IL. is
just over the border). I personally have never even
seen the car.

Rhet
The Eagle Premier was also sold as the Dodge Monoco before it finally
died off. The engine was also used by Volvo and I believe Citroen.
I would imagine that there is absolutely no capability of installing a
4.0 in the thing as it is a front wheel drive automobile so room even
with the fact that it is a North South installation space is certainly
going to be a premium.
To my way of thinking this is a real load. You would have to want one
badly and have a parts source dialed in and be willing to dedicate
yourself to maintaining the thing. The car might have had a lot of
things going for it when it was new but to hit the show room as an
orphan or an unwanted ugly step child was not one of them. If you do an
internet search for information I was surprised at how much information
there actually is on them. I used Yahoo and "Eagle Premier" + "Dodge
Monoco" for my search.
As far as weird locations for components as I remember it has more than
a few but then again I have been wrenching on 10 year old + front wheel
drive cars myself for a while in order to maintain them and in many
cases they are not all that bad if you have a manual to tell you how to
get at stuff easily, but looking at it another way if you are a good
mechanic and have the capability to weld well you can probably install a
new Chrysler Hemi and rear wheel drive with just a little help from the
Red Hammer.

I thought that the only applications that would be listed would be AMC,
Jeep, and Chrysler, but apparently more vehicles used the pan at least
if not the whole transmission. One weird listing that I have not
confirmed is accurate is that the Hyundai Pony and Stellar (Canadian
models) used the pan gasket. Maybe something Mitsubishi and Chrysler
had going and used the pan and gasket?
