The only problem I can see happening, and it's not THAT low a
probability, is if you were to get say a piece of tree leaf in
there, it could suck up flat against the angle-cut end of the
tube and totally cut off fuel.
You'd die cruisign flat an level on a freeway; pull over,
scratch head, car restarts, problem never recurs, because
the leaf moved out of the way while braking with engine off,
awaiting the next coincidence. Chalk it up to "oldcaritis".
Any old sort of crap screen on the end of the pickup would
reduce this probability to zero.
Aren't old cars fun?

Isn't the discussion of whether you have one or not rather moot anyway?
I have been unable to locate a source to purchase one at for quite a few
years now!

Well... I recently had mine out, on my 70 Hornet, and it was
split on one end, as many are... I pushed it back together,
ran a loop of iron wire over to hold it together, and hope
it'll keep moths, leaves, wood chips, whatever, out of the
pickup. Said large objects, I would rather not BE in the gas
tank in the first place!
I put a fuel filter between the steel line and pump input
anyways. Belt AND suspenders!

I have shipped a total of 4 cars (2 from California and 2 from Colorado to
Texas)...
There's ALOT of shady auto-transport companies out there and ALOT of
crooked-ness. All of my transports went fine BUT, the first company
(Southerland transport) that I used (and was happy with) later stiffed ALOT
of people on the internet. I couldn't believe the crap that they pulled on
other people.
Here's a small sample:
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/auto_trans/southerland.html
MOST people you contact (and get quotes from) are brokers. They do not
move the car. They take your info and money, and post the pick-up/delivery
on a auto-transporter's network. They will charge you say $700 and they
will skim about $300 off and then offer $400 for the transport to anyone
going near your destinations. They don't seem to have any quality control
either (especially for us 'beater-car people').
Now that I have scared you, let me tell you how this works...
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION:
If your pick-up and drop-off locations are along a major transport
corridor, you prices will be low. You can ship a car from LA to Northern
Virginia cheaper than a car from North Carolina to Tennessee. I get stuff
delivered to Austin, Texas fairly cheap because it's off I-10 which is the
southern east coast to west coast route.
SPLIT TRANSPORTS:
Brokers can be good because they can split the hauling between two
carriers. One carrier can pick it up and drop it off at a lot then the
other carrier can pick it up. This is DANGEROUS because if the second
carrier doesn't pick up the car, you get charged lot fees and can EASILY
lose the car. Yes, you can sue the broker but, you won't get
anything. They just bankrupt that paper company and open a new one the
next day.
NON-RUNNING:
If the car is non-running or the brakes don't work, alot of carriers won't
touch it. The ones that will, will charge you a $100-150 fee just for
handling.
MY RECOMENDATION:
For the first two transports, I used brokers (and didn't think to get the
name of the actual transporter). For the third transport I located an
actual transporter and not a broker. I was happy with them so for my 4th
transport, I called them back. They did 2 good transports for me.
All in One Transport
20854 Hwy 59 South, #11
New Caney, Texas 77357
281-354-6699
All in One runs carriers all over the country.
MY TRANSPORTS:
1) Denver, Colorado to Austin, Texas / Southerland (broker) / ~$700
(running car)
2) Northern California (coast) to Austin, Texas / ??? (broker) / ~$400
(running car)
3) Flager, Colorado to Austin, Texas / All in 1 (transporter) / ~$700
(non-running car)
4) Los Angeles, California to Austin, Texas / All in 1 (transporter) /
~$500 (running car)

Below is a old auction of a 72 Matador 2door Z-code 401/4barrel i sold last
year, it is for sale, I think a little too much for the fellow to restore.
It is in minnesota and is listed in the AMO magazine and also in my SUAD
lists, he is asking I believe $3400. Really unusual car, but needs going
thru. Below is the auction itself:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4562427988&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOAS:US:3
and there are numerous photos of it in here, along with photos of the only
known surviving 71 Matador Machine:

Regarding the little socks inside the fuel tank, I have run a number of my
cars without them and never had any trouble, but I also run not one, but two
clear fuel filters on my cars that don't have those. My 68 Rebel convertible
"Machine' has run this setup since 1986 and not one problem with the 401.
Tom is right, about the only possibility of something happening is if a
leaf, piece of paper or some foreign object somehow gets into the tank and
cuts off flow. Chances of that however are low unless you have a real Hanes
sock for a gas cap.
On the transports, several things here, if the car runs/drives, be sure to
tell them as a inoperable vehicle usually costs $100-$200 more to ship. Also
tell them "you are willing to wait until a truck comes thru" that is, they
scout to see if any trucks will be coming thru that area and if so, if a
open space, you are in. Sometimes takes 1-6 weeks however but usually drops
the price also. Many shippers also are contract, so like cabbies, will toss
what is thrown at them fare wise.
Here is a list of shippers I put in several of my ebay auctions; CSI here in
Houston has transported over 50 cars for me. I also like Rebel Yell near
Dallas.
CSI Transport 713-451-1515 or FAX 713-453-7889 Ask for Scott
Auto Transport Services Inc. 800-523-7182 or FAX 386-418-0132
Rebel Yell Transport 888-556-5770 or www.rytransport.com
PassPort Transport 800-325-4267; or 314-878-5777 or FAX 314-878-7295
One more thing, with fuel prices near $3, many shippers are charging "fuel
surcharges" so watch that, whether it is shipping a car, or large item like
hood, fender, make sure no hidden mysterious charges there.

Before you go huntin' those connectors, be aware that you need some special
tools to work with them (special crimper and terminal removal tool). I
picked up a set of tools and starter kit from Summit racing for about $60
several years ago when I was debutchering the wiring in a early 90's GMC
S-15. BTW, you can buy connector bodies and terminals from a car dealer but
you'll go broke doing it.
As far as the Painless harness goes, they're very high quality and Painless
has excellent technical support. Their universal kits us a GM style fuse
block and you can get GM style steering column plugs but I'd double check
that AMC and GM use the same column pin outs. Also, American Autowire sells
a bunch of different GM style steering column plug bodies and individual
terminals if you need to make repairs.
