I've done that too but if he doesn't have an air tool and the engine is out of 
the car I've found that it's easier to jam a piston with the rope.

Easiest way is to use an impact wrench but I think you can put a screw 
driver between the bolt heads and the end of the crank to keep the crank 
from turning while you break them loose. Once you break them loose, 
they'll come out pretty easy.
