Actually, there's a simple trick to not sliding the head gasket: Make 
guide pins.

Get a couple of bolts the same thread size as the head bolts but longer, 
cut the bolt heads off and chamfer them so you don't have sharp edges, 
slot them (think big flat head screws), and install them in the block. 
You'll then be able to put the head straight down. Once you start a few 
of the head bolts, all you have to do is back out the guide pins with a 
flat blade screw driver.
