Depends on your goals... more torque, lower mileage. Having recently
swapped out a weak, worn-out 232+BW auto for a rebuilt 258+904 auto, it was
Noticable improvement in power. Not neck-snapping or wow-generating, but
definitely noticable. If the 258 is in the same shape as the 232? Probably
noticable with a small n :-) Lower mileage by the same amount, depending on
the weight of your throttle foot.

The old BWs can be rebuilt and are fine transmissions. We are talkin about
a stock more or less six and non-racing apps... the even older air-cooled
BW in my Classic is on it's second rebuild (that I have done, history
before 1988 unknown) and 250,000+ miles. They're fine.

If you over-carb it, you'll hate it. It will run terribly, have poor
behaviour, worse power, and terrible mileage. Clifford intakes won't do
carb heat (at least the ones I saw) and definitely not with headers. If you
are in a cold location... headers are hard to fit, eventually rust out, ...
to get the CFMs up where those parts will help you, you're out of stock
territory. Luggin down the highway at 2000 rpm with acavernous intake and
exhaust is a waste of everything.

The HEI is a good idea however! And the GM alt are "better" in some ways
(mainly availability, cost, ...) but if the current one is charging fine,
I'd save the GM project til the Moto starts acting up.
