I saw this once on a coffin-nose Mat. The car was in such nice shape 
(before the animals got to it) I wondered why it was there. I pulled the 
747 for my Mat and found a plug missing, just like you did. I tore it 
down, and found the oil pump pretty much hosed. My theory was that it 
had been in a tranny shop, they'd done some pressure testing, and the 
customer had decline the repairs. And, of course, they forgot to put the 
plug back in the service port before it was towed to the yard. How does 
the trans work after you replaced the plug? I'd guess something similar 
occurred...
