idle curiosity - what motor does it have - the v6? what tranny?

I nearly went through all of 2006 without buying a car but fell prey to the
local Pick-n-Pull on the 30th. A low mile (144334 kms / 89630 mi.) beauty with a
nasty transmission leak. VIN and body numbers both '1308' so it's about 1000
cars from the last ever AMC. Built September 23rd 1987. Air, tilt, _no_ cruise.
Turns out the transmission leak was a missing pressure plug. Reverse is slow to
actuate but otherwise seems OK.

and here's why the tranmission was leaking.

Good Morning Andrew,

The Volvo diesels in the 240 series were Audi truck I6's with the same
bore & stroke as the Audi 2.0 I5's used in the 5000 and the 1.6 I4's
used in the 4000 and non-TDI VW's. Good luck finding a good parts
person! Please let us all know if you find one who will turn around and
look at the ancient scrolls, er books behind them after punching a few
keys turns up nothing!

Regards,

The VM 2.5 diesel is/was used in these vehicles:

http://www.vmmotori.it/en/01/01/index.jsp

http://www.vmmotori.it/en/01/02/index.jsp

The 2.5 is an I4. There is a discussion about an Eagle converted to a VM
I6 in 1980 or so on the Eagle's Nest. The VM diesel is interesting as it
uses one cylinder head per cylinder. The engine in the Liberties is a
2.8 liter version of the same engine. A 2.5 or 2.8 with a turbo would be
a nice replacement for the AMC 4.2 IMHO. I believe that the converted
Eagle used the stock transmission, but I can't remember if it was an
automatic or standard. I found a Spirit for sale close to me that was a
fairly plain car with an I4 and a standard that got me thinking how nice
that would be with one of these in there... but of course I didn't buy
it... too many other things going on and I haven't a garage anymore.
