Don,
I saw your question on the AMC list.
Look for 3M general spray adhesive for high temperature use at the auto
parts store,
or ask at an upholstery shop. Find a roller with handle about four inches
wide.
I found mine at a fiberglass polyester resin supply house, but a small paint
roller
with a very tight nap roller would work also.
Get at least two friends to help. Take the seats out, cover the dash and
rear deck. Protect anything
that can be ruined by the adhesive.
Test fit the headliner using many friends to temporarily hold it in place,
and determine a center line and center point for both directions of
alignment.
Spray a fairly heavy coat on both the fiberglass glass headliner pad and the
vinyl fabric.
Probably will take about a can or more of spray on each if I remember
correctly. Don't get cheap with the adhesive as the new headliner will drop
soon if you do.
I draped my headliner over a 1 x 4 laid between two ladders to ease the
application of adhesive.
Read the directions on the can and follow them for drying time.
Carefully move the vinyl headliner inside the car and lift to the
aforementioned centerlines/centerpoint. slowly work in all directions toward
outer edges of headliner using many hands and the roller. Roll again in all
the compound curve areas. Use just the correct amount of pressure, don't
crush the fiberglass liner.
Replace trim, seats, etc. and go for a drive to the beer store for friends
who helped.

Aw heck! I was going from memory! Must have been 2.87 or 3.08 stock, now
I'll have to look it up!! ;>
I do know it had 3.31 gears though, and they were listed as
"performance" gears - what performance you can get from a stock 1V 196
w/auto trans. I changed to the 2V later, and a new cam livened it up at
cruising speed, but nothing can help a 196 for off the line performance.
Maybe if the intake could be opened up more, but I doubt it. I tried a
3.78 gear set out of an OD car once. All hat did was push my cruising
rpm up. 0-70 stayed the same according to crude stop watch timing over a
marked run. Might have got a tenth or two, but not worth the cruise
loss.

On the 196 (OHV and L-head) the temp sensor is in the head near the
thermostat housing. Late model AMC sixes (232/258/4.0L) have it on the
left rear of the head. Earlier models (199/232) I believe have it in the
thermostat housing. The only AMC engine I know of with a temp sensor in
the center of the block is the Renix 4.0L. Later HO 4.0L engines have it
in the thermostat housing.

Rod knock, timing cover missing? You need to shop around! A new timing
cover will set you back about $200-300. At best you likely need to have
at least one rod resized and the crank turned down, at worst the crank
and at least
one rod are trashed and both will need replacing. Better to spend more
on a better choice. This is a rebuilder at best, and will need a
complete overhaul. You'll have over $1500 in it with a new timing cover
and crank, and just for a bone stock rebuild (well, you could go better
with the cam, but will need to keep the stock intake and carb for that
price)!

so,a wrecking yard here in town just got in a 79
cherokee with a 360. he wants 250 for the engine. it
smokes and knocks after running for a short time.
someone in springfield mo said he had a 304 i could
get from him. but i havent heard from him for a while.
is that to much to pay for a 360 that knocks and
smokes? he said it was a lower end knock but not real
bad. the front timing cover is gone. open to opinions.

Thankfully, I'm located on the fringe of the "Big Snow Storm" that is crossing the nation. Located in Stephenson County Illinois, I awoke this morning to a new month and five inches of snow with no sign of slowing and 16 mph winds. The temperature has gone from low 60's to 18, currently at 0830 hours it's 21° with a wind chill of 7°F. I travelled the five and a half miles to work this morning in four wheel drive. I thought the quarter mile long driveway was bad, but then I reached the road, wow. This will be a "crash" course in winter driving tactics for many in these parts. Central Illinois and the great state of Chicago is getting pounded, look out Indiana, Ohio, Pensylvania and east coast, it's on the way.

Thanks to everyone that responded to my plea for help, especially Armand.
My task is made somewhat easier because the fibre headliner mould is out of the car. I have a roller which I used to put the headliner in the first time.
It went in nicely except for a few wrinkles which I attempted to remove with
a hair dryer.
Thats when things went wrong. The heat of the dryer loosened up the contact
cement and everything that had any tension on it pulled away. That got me thinking that the first hot day in the summer (and Yes we do get them up here Eddie) would end up with the headliner down around my ears.
Thats when I turned to the list for help.
Once again, thanks and I'm off in search of new glue.

Frank makes the best point on passing on this purchase, I would not buy
this engine as a builder. But!!!!
As you are planning to change over from and older I-6 to a newer V8 this
might be a good parts purchase for you. If this engine is a long block
and has all of the accessories still on it such as power steering pump,
alternator etc etc. These parts alone including the brackets and the
unique specialty items such as the harmonic balancer and/or the flex
plate and torque converter are worth all of the aprox $250.00 by them
selves if you were to try to buy them separately. It is possible to
purchase a good 360 engine but having it missing these important parts
is very real.
I have a running 304 that I am not going to use. It will be replaced
with a 360, but the accessories will be used off of the 304 when it
comes time to make the swap, this includes the manifolds, alternator and
brackets, power steering pump and air conditioning pump and mounts along
with the motor mounts and the torque converter. I also have the 360, but
it has the harmonic balancer and flex plate thus between the two
engines, I have no further need to purchase parts as I have them all.
Anyway, food for thought.

My buddy's mom rear-ended a 67 Rebel wagon. The two partis are keeping it off the insurance books because the wagon would likely be totaled for the accident. I'm told that any Rebel or Ambo wagon from 67-69 will work. Anyone have a bumper or a lead on one?

Jack by the time the storm gets to me right outside of N.Y. City with
60+ degree weather all we are going to get is 50 mph winds, torrential
rain with thunder storms. Any snow will be way north of me. How did you

The location of the sending unit is in the head next to the water outlet hose, where it clamps onto the head. There should be a threaded hole there for the sender.
I really like the dress-up job you've done on this engine. I've got a '62 Classic wagon engine disassembled and have dropped off just about every piece that can be powder coated and now have them all back. Once I find a source for hardened valve seats, I'll get the engine back together.

Aww, poor puddie tat fall down go boom. This was one of a whole series of
those 'scammerfest' auctions I mentioned yesterday, I went and dropped $1.4
million in bids on them. Like the Men's Club or Rick's Gentlemans Club here
in Houston, my "credit limit" has been increased. With ebay I can bid up to
$99 million now as I am rich man, bwahaha. Always good to have the valets
park my American Motors vehicle out front of the strip club, btumakes it
hard for me to escape out back door. But the notice below is something
commonly sent out by ebay when you bid on a fraud auction, in this case,
most, if not all of those I mentioned in the scammerfest post yesterday.
That possibly had to be one of the biggest dumbazz scammers out there,
putting up 'test' auctions to see if he had actually comprimised (ie:
STOLEN) other ebayers user ID and passwords! "This is a test auction, do not
bid" was the text. So I bid and bid again. Not that I had the money to back
it up, it is more like AMC Enron here. But knowing ebay had already been
alerted to these scam auctions, I figured what the hell, it was better than
looking at a photo of Britney Spears getting out of a limo anyhows.
There is some good advise from ebay below ya'll might want to read. It was
not too long ago you know that not one, but FOUR real AMCers, here and on
the forum.net fell for that Buy It Now AMX for $4500, so the scammer made
$18K in one day. Paypallled/electronically transferred the funds thinking
they were getting best damned deal out there. Thet got deal all right, so
read the notice below on how to protect one's self as this not only applies
to ebay, but all sorts of things from Amazon, Wachovia Bank, Chase Bank
giving you a $20 reward, credit union emails, you name it, scammers need
Christmas money too..ho ho ho...

This weekend I will re-up the e-bay t-shirts, and hats and some cars, so IF
you're looking, watch out.
I am also planning to start sending this info to clubs, for the calendars
with club event and show dates available, also available with club car pics
in place. I also have had the plan to offer t-shirts, coffee mugs, hats,
and much other to the clubs for treasury sales w/no inventory needed (I do
all the work, you get the $$$). Have them contact me if interested.
I have also made up custom shirts, for events in the past and will do more
as needed. I have the resources here and can do.
AND The Rambler Rescue Booklets are available to whoever wants it and
whoever wants to be a part of it. Spread the word!
