i am trying to get new bearings for my rear end in my 62 classic. there is a parts store in town that has some in stock and can get the rest. problem is, they say there are 2 different rearends for that car. none i have heard of. people on here say it is an amc model 15. the book at carquest says there is a spicer 53, and a spicer 27A. one has a 7.25" ring gear, and the other has a 9.something ring gear. i havent yet had a chance to measure my ring gear to see. but it has bearings and seals that seem to make it look like there are actually 4 different axles. i have the 196, and 3 speed manual. the tab on the diff cover says 9/34. in my tsm that shows a gear ratio so im pretty sure that means it is the 3.77 rear. but what the axle tells me, and what the book at carquest tells me is coming up different. they show one rearend from like 58-62, and the other is like 61-63 or somethin i think. anyway, some help would be great. i need to pull the axle shafts out to have the
bearings pressed off, but would be great if i knew what i have before hand so i can have the parts ordered if needed so i can get it all done in one afternoon. they have a machineshop in the back of the carquest so they can do it all for me real quick and easy there.

I've been thinking about trying to set up an "archive of dealers"
page. There is one that's been passed around the 'Net (
http://amcrc.com/tech/dealer.html ) , but it kinda disturbed me that the
person who assembled it was claiming copyright. Not sure how that is
possible, given how much of this info was open source two decades ago
(phone books, the list of dealers AMC maintained and any dealer would give
you if you asked, etc). Even now a lot of info can be gleaned off the net
about former AMC dealers:

Jim, what part of Wash is your cabin in? I go thru the
I-5 corridor frequently and know the Puget Sound area.
Down south in Oregon we have had about two Novs worth
of rain in one month. We won't hit a state record but
Stumptown should pass their mark this weekend. It is
just plain wet out here with no relief in sight.
Oh well, hey So Cal, wanna buy some water.....Russ

I guess they are still giving Steven Clark credit for this.. He did this as
a project when he was in school as I recall. I kept a link to his page
here. He had posted this info the the AMC-List.

Chances are this is just frozen in time at the Indiana University server.
One can either set up a link to it or else just download it and post it
giving him credit for it. I wonder if Steven Clark is still with us on the
AMC-List. He was quite active at that time. I think he was working on a

I read the chart listing engine weights (dig that
Marmon V-16 weight). It also lists the '59 327 as
being heavier than other years by 70 lbs. Why?....Russ

62 rear axle bearings: do you mean the outside, wheel end,
or in the center cluster as well?
There might have been variations from year to year re: tabs for
brake lines, vents, etc, but as far as I know, all of the torque
tube axles in those years are mainly either "six" or "eight".
I'm fairly sure there are "twin grip" eight axles, but I don't
think there was a twin grip six.
Probably the parts store is seeing a six axle, and an eight axle,
for a given modelk year. Somehow I doubt there is a difference
in the outer axle bearing, race, grease seal, axle shaft, hub,
etc are different six vs. eight. Doesn't seem very Rambler-like.
Externally, any six (eight) torque tube axle assembly should
fit in any six (eight) car, and probably are interchangeable
six vs. eight, I just don't know about tube length and front
yoke trivia.
(There might also be possibly front (trans) yoke spine
differences for manual vs. auto, but I actually doubt that,
just check before assuming.)

In the US, data itself cannot be copyrighted. A particular
publication of data can be copyrighted (eg. I print my own
phonebook).
There's a gray area in there, where if you simply copy dat out
line by line of a phonebook, say, without changing anything,
making a virtually identical copy... if you re-juggled all the
columns, or arranged by street, etc you'd make it unique. But
telco's put fake phoenbook data in, for example, that you would
only get if you copied the data out of their book.

If you read all the data from the page, electronically, and put
it into a spreadsheet, and re-published it with modifications
and enhancements, you would be perfectly legal.
He gives credit to others for data preovided, and it's in another
format (our ex-own Gwen Smith).
Probably (BALD-FACED GUESS, I did not ask him/her) the author
wants to prevent someone from printing out and selling their
hard-earned work. I wouldn't blame them.
There are copyright texts that can give limited and carefully
restricted rights hat allow people like us to copy, "own"
and enhance the work without allowing us to sell it at a
profit. Creative Commons and variants for example. All variants
are offshoots of GNU and open source work. These are the right
way to handle data that you want to be "owned" by a community,
but prevent from bein ripped off or locked up by unscrupulous
sh*ts.

I looked through Eddie's list (I think) fairly
carefully and no ready source jumped out at me.
Of course, I am also interested in any experienced
comments on quality and cost.

Yeah, Why replace what ain't wurn out yet!
I too tememebr when they started puttin corn squeezins in the gas!
They used to put little ears of corn stickers on the pumps!
Stuff screwed up a lot of carbs when it first came out and started loosinin up all the varnish!

I would stick to a RAM or Mclueod [SP?] Piece and avoid Centerforce.
Especially Centerforce release bearings. If $ are at issue I would use rebuilt clutch and pressure plate, but still get the Ram or Mcluoed Release bearing. I used what I thought was a good name brand bearing in my American and it was noisy in les sthan 1,000 miles. I pulled the trans and went to the Mcleoud Bearing and all is wells
When Buying rebuilt pieces try to stay to NAPA or similay good name Rebuilds and resurface the flywheel. By following all the proper steps if you get a bad rebuilt piece they will usually stand behind it. But your going to eat the labor. I have rebuilt in mine as I horse traded a 4.0L core shortblock for a rebuilt 10.9" clutch pressure plate and resurfaced flywheel. It has a worked well for me except for the aforementioned release bearing that I bought myself!
