Frank: I possibly read about a re-designed head for '62 in "Standard Catalogue of American Motors: 1902 - 1987" but I wouldn't swear on it. My copy is out with all my Ramblers, 93 miles away, so I can't check now.

The info also possibly came from this list, so I didn a search, but couldn't quickly find a reference to head changes in '62.

Then again, it could just be that I mis-remember something!

Fix the Concord, keep her happy.

Where are you? If you're anywhere near the north Georgia area, I can hook you up with all that stuff you need, both to fix the Concord and that other stuff you need.

But, you'd need to come pick it up---too big to ship most of that stuff, especially if you get a lot of it!!

Good God, man! If the wife takes an interest in ANYTHING car-related, do exactly what she wants! This is a no-brainer! The only reason I have a '73 Porsche is because I once heard a comment to the effect of "Oh - that's a cute car . . ."

The Right Answer: Give her the Concord. When she tires of it, you can THEN
get the parts.

The Semi-right Answer: Swap the parts so she has a running Concord with
non-tilt wheel and drum brakes.

The Wrong Answer (aka 'Sleep On The Couch Answer'): "Dear, I bought that
car for parts. Suck it up."

I?m an occasional estate sale/auction guy, though only if I can get
cheap.. most times am wasting my Sat mornings.. (bought a ?63 American
for $60- last year) This past spring a notice for auction came out.
Canx at last minute for some reason.. Had a 76 Hornet listed. I
watched this web site ALL summer waiting for it to come back up.
Finally it did, three weeks ago. Well, it figures I was traveling that
day (travel for work), in fact I was flying back to States landing in
Detroit about an hour after auction was probably over? I put in an
absentee bid of $150-, as I did not know anything about the car other
than had a 258 and was a 76 Hornet. Called when I landed, One other
bidder and of course he went over my absentee price (win $175-). This
past Saturday, another auction, spoke with the ?trailer girl? and she
said that the fella that won the car bought it so he could sell for
scrap.. She traced me down a bit later and gave me the guy?s number
and today I went to look at it. 76 Hornet (sportabout I think) wagon.
258, auto, AC. Has the alum wheels, only 2 center caps. Wheels are a
bit bunged up as I believe he dragged the car home on flat tires, they
eventually collapsed and wheel on road damage. Motor turned over, no
air cleaner so open carb. Motor looked fairly clean. Was a fabric
topped car, this is shredded and I found a couple of holes in the roof
so body is basically shot. Interior not too bad but nothing to note as
special or to keep. Windshield good. Bumpers and grill are good. Trim
around wheelwells could be salvaged. He removed the gas tank, do not
know if is good or of he bungled that up. Gut is telling me he will
want at least $200- for it.. Spoke to his wife, fuzzy?s there told me
he may want more?. I COULD do 200-, and I have a place to store, but is
it worth it???? Gonna get with him later tonight to see what he does
want for it..

Possibly, to be continued??

You are a very lucky guy to have a lady who wants to get into the scheme of things. My compadres are always saying they wish they could find a gal like mine... she's out in the heat/humidity in the garage, working just as hard as I am at restoring the Typhoon. She cleans, deals with stuff that can easily be removed, helps with the parts that aren't easy to remove, and has yet to complain about it.

I was hoping to save a second Typhoon for her to drive, but it turned out the underbelly was too far gone. So, when we do a cruise in the future, she can either drive the Typhoon, or the Marlin, and we'll BOTH participate in the event. Enjoy, Jack. It's really unique she's into it with you.

I saw that Concord.
I vote that it appeared to be way to nice to part for a steering column and disc brakes! Fix it up for her, be way glad she is interested. My wife does not understand at all. for several years I abandoned my cars as foolish due to her thinking coercing my thinking! I then figured out that life sucked without my cars and boats [which she enjoys] suck more! I wanted to partner up with her brother and fix up his 73 tahiti Big block chebbie jet boat and she didn't even understand that! All she wants is a boat to ride around in. She enjoys no part of cleaning or detailing or anything resembling such.
I returned to my Ramblers in about 1994 after selling off my 84 Mustang GT in 1992 with the birth of my second son. I figured Ramblers were cheap cars and would not involve the high dollars other makes required. So far I've been right.
My driver dream car would be an 80-83 Concord with a six and a T-5. Fis it up enjoy it. Tilt columns are easy finds, disc brakes take a little more scrounging but can be had.

Now what do I do? She wants the Concord and I want the parts! On
one
hand I see a car worth fixing and then out of the corner of my eye I
see
the Hornet waiting for a power disc brake conversion and a tilt
column.

A: I have a '93 ZJ 4.0L and AW4 (it was an early model) in my '84 J10. The
ZJ front pipe (probably the same as HO XJ) will fit with some tweaking, but
the Renix manifold and front pipe works much nicer. I had an '87 4.0L in
there before with the pipe attached and it fit like it was made for it. (I
pulled the motor back out because my current daily driver needed a swap out.
I figured it wouldn't run so well in the J10 with 200,000 miles on it
anyways, but it's been fine in the MJ except blowby)
I have a high flow cat (Random Technologies) to go on with regular Jtruck
exhaust the rest of the way (6 and 8 share the rear pipes) I very nearly
hooked up an XJ clutch master (I was within 20 minutes from having it
mounted on the firewall. You could still see the outline in pencil I did to
align it with the FSJ pedal assembly) but UPS lost my high steer linkage and
RH steering knuckle just before my trip to Ouray in '02, so I had to convert
my '86 Comanche to 4x4 and lift it 3" for the trip instead. (I have the
truck back again and the PO wants to sell it for $600, but the 5 speed 4x4
trans died and we swapped back a 2wd trans. It's somewhere around 300,000
miles on the clock and no rust yet!)
Your tire size will be the deciding factor as to what gearing you'll want
to run. I ran 235/75R15 with my '83 Cherokee (Mexican 4.5L engine) and 2.72
gears with 999 lockup automatic and I towed a 5 ton (empty) trailer with it
that I made out of an IH bus and tandem wheel mobile home frame.

My J10 has the same trans and gears with a 258. Runs 1900 rpm at
60 in
4th.
Normal city driving uses 3rd a lot. 3rd in my trans is getting
noisey.
I've also used 4lo without locking the front hubs for low speed
maneuvering.
Shifting from lo to hi on the move gets a nasty crunch from the
transfer
case. I wouldn't recommend it as normal procedure. I have a set
of 3.31
diffs from a Cherokee that would help things if I ever get
around to
putting them in. :)
------------------------------

3.31 gears would bring rpm @ 60 up to ~2300, or drop you to 50
mph @
1900 rpm. Not bad, and I know you'd like the better pulling
power. I was
thinking a 3.08 would be sufficient -- ~2100 rpm @ 60. These
things
really don't like to cruise over 2500 rpm stock (65 mph w/3.31
gears),
but of course will. A better cam would help that, but I'm not
planning
on opening the engine anytime soon. A small 4V would be nice,
and I'll
keep on the lookout for a used one. If I rebuild in 3-4 years,
provided
rust hasn't started becoming an issue, I'll build a 4.0L, maybe
even
another stroker. Might go ahead with a 4.0L exhaust manifold for
now...
need an exhaust system! Couldn't find a vendor with pre-bent
pipe for
sale though. Wanted to put it on myself and skip the cat.

A: I'm not sure what starter they used, but it's a Nissan diesel engine
adapted to a Mopar big block 727. There is a whole list of CJ10 people on
Yahoogroups (or there was a couple years ago, before I dropped my diesel
powered J10 or Comanche ideas) Same setup can be found in IH Scouts and some
pickups. Dodge ran both the Nissan diesel and Mitsubishi 6 cyl diesel in
their pickups in the late '70s and early '80s (more in Canada than down
here) before putting the Cummins engine in during the late '80s.

Hello,
My name is Matthew Harker. I am a US Army soldier stationed in
Iraq. I have come across a 1986 AMC CJ10 Air Force 4x2 aircraft
towing vehicle. It has a I-6 desiel motor. It needs a new
starter. Can you help? The starter has a 3 bolt crysler type
flange. The markings on it say: 513-14 12V and has 977 stamped.
It was manufactured in Japan. Any information would be helpful.
Thanks

Kind of another rookie question but here goes-

Rebuilding drum brakes all around on 60 Rambler Wagon. Trying to
remove front drum passenger side, shoes retracted with no problem, but
drum wouldn't come off. Planned on repacking bearings so took off
nut and drum slips off no problem, but appears seized to the hub.
So I have the drum and hub removed as one unit. Could get away with
having drum turned like this, but I've already purchased new drum and
would like to put that on.

If you follow me so far, I'm tempted to soak the drum/hub in PB
Blaster then slam the lug bolts against a flat surface, but think I
might damage hub or inner bearings. Should I pry bearings out
first? Try heat around lugs then pry hub? Am I missing something
obvious here? OK if I lose the drum but don't want to break anything
   else.

-- Thanks a lot for your time!

   Johnny

A: I have the NP208J (pulled it off an '80 Cherokee 6 cyl's lock up 727
that's going into my '73 J4000 behind the 304) I replaced it with a Dodge
NP208D (which is passenger's side drop or front driveshaft output to the
non-4wheelers instead of the FSJ '80 and newer driver's side drop) In fact,
the NP208 was used by the Big3 as well as Jeep, but with some differences
between them. (I won't bore the non-wheelers on here with all the technicals
I discovered) Only Dodge/Jeep were a direct exchange to "flip" the tcase
from one side to the other.

A few people on our local wheeling board have these. One is
being parted out, so I will forward the link to that guy. In
fact, 3 more were up for auction at Selfridge ANG in the past
week. All you need are a 1980-up 8-lug D44 front from a J-20
and a 208J and you can drive it like a regular 4wd vehicle.
They have Dana 70 rears with 4.88 gearing.

I have the axle and t-case, but no CJ-10a. :(
