 I have a 1972 Hornet SST, 4.2L straight 6. I am looking for a crankshaft 
pulley and an air filter housing assembly, including the hose/valve to the 
valve cover. May need more parts later, but this will get me running again!

***Bob, seeing you are in Houston, contact the guys at O'Reillys on North 
Gessner. I recently needed rotors and pads for my 72 Ambassador SST wagon 
and they had no problem getting them brand new.

 I need a passengerside quater panel for my 68 Rambler American 2dr sedan. 
This car was all restored and show ready but was side swiped last fall. I

DETROIT - General Motors has formally announced its new Hydra-matic 
6L80 transmission - a high-torque-capacity gearbox designed for use 
in such high-performance, rear- and four-wheel-drive vehicles as the 
2006 Chevrolet Corvette, the 2006 Cadillac STS-V and XLR-V, and the 
2007 GMC Yukon Denali.

The 6L80 is the first in a series of new six-speed automatics planned 
by GM. The automaker has jointly developed with Ford Motor a new six-
speed transmission for front- and all-wheel-drive applications. That 
unit goes into production next year, and will be used on the new 2007 
GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook crossover vehicles, as well as the 2007 
Saturn Aura sedan.

GM is coming relatively late to the six-speed party. Volkswagen, for 
instance, has been offering six-speed automatics in Europe on its 
smaller models, including the Golf, for more than a year. Mercedes-
Benz last year introduced a seven-speed automatic, and Lexus is 
expected to announce a new eight-speed automatic in January when it 
formally unveils the 2007 LS 460 sedan.

GM's 6L80 transmission was designed to handle the extra torque 
generated by the company's latest generation of high-performance 
engines, including the new 6.2-liter V8 in the '07 Yukon Denali and 
Cadillac Escalade, which produces 380 horsepower and 415 pound-feet, 
and the supercharged 4.4-liter V8 in the V-Series Cadillacs, which 
delivers 440 hp and 430 lb-ft.

The 6L80 six-speed automatic has a wide, 6.04-to-1 overall ratio, 
including two overdrive gears, that is designed to deliver a good 
balance of performance and fuel economy. The 6L80 also has a "tap 
up/tap down" capability that allows the driver to manually select 
upshifts and downshifts with a button on the column shifter.

What this means to you: GM is finally coming to the six-speed party - 
just as Lexus dusts off a new eight-speed.

Just picked up the Nov. Popular Hot Rodding to check out the '70 AMX being 
sold on ebay.  Nick, nice shot to the arm for you as being noted for 
building the engine.  The car is very nice, but some little things that I 
personally don't care for.  It's nice seeing a good write up on an AMX 
though.

This looks like a fun project, but if I were drawing it out 
with chalk on the garage floor I think I would be trying to figure
out how to get an engine adapter to get my I-6 bolted up to an 
early Olds Tornado or Cadillac Eldorado front drive transmission. 
They were North South applications, if I remember correctly chain
drive from the engine to the transmission and many were used for 
mid or rear engine applications.
The Olds 350 I think and a Cadillac engine were used I believe.
The Cadillac Seville might be a possibility too!
This used the Olds 350 and one of the V-6's also (3.8, 4.3?). 
I don't know much about the mechanics of these things but does 
that make it a BOP bell housing? If so would there be some AMC/GM
bell housing adapter that would allow a straight bolt up?
Of course this could get a bit weird if your I6 predates the 72 
bell housing bolt pattern change?
Or if this is an early configuration what bolt pattern or bell 
housing combination allowed AMC to bolt up their I6 to the GM 
Hydramatic that was orginially used back in the 50's? And would 
it work for this?

For what it is worth. 
I have never had a desire to replace a Carter BBD with 
anything else under most circumstances. 
I have had no problem with rebuilding them if it was needed,
adjusted correctly they work just fine. 
I have built some quick I-6's using a stock BBD and have 
one stock one currently on the road that regularly gets 24+
miles per gallon and will run with current traffic conditions. 
Set up correctly with the vacuum lines hooked up as they 
should be they have never given me a bit of trouble and they 
pass smog in this state.
Are they perfect? No! But they get the job done well. The basic 
problems I have found were with the vacuum lines, not the 
carburetors. They are also small, but that is typical of 
all American made I-6 set ups other than the Pontiac Sprint
packages used a number of years back. I have reason 
to believe that they are specked out at 179cfm by Carter which 
is more than a bit small for an AMC I6 or anyone else's for 
that matter. 
For those situations where small was a problem my preference 
was then and still is to install a small Carter AFB and go for it.
If that was not exotic enough I have gone the fuel injection 
route. 
I have yet to, but it is on my round-tuit list to built a turbo 
version of an AMC I-6. I would dearly love to beat up on 
Buick GNs. 
I have found that the advantages of not having to spend a ton 
of money on a carburetor that is no better, not having to cob up 
some kind of crude linkage and I have seen a few beauts , and 
for automatic applications not having to cob up some form of 
kick down linkage has more than paid for itself in pure lack of
aggravation.

So what is new about them?
I run a 4 speed 904!
Granted it is short 2 gears as compared to the 
GM units but it fits my Spirit, cost 50 cents 
and works.

they were indeed longitudinal.

there were several toro/eldo transaxles.  the first ['67-'78] was
th400-based, for the olds 425 and caddy 500.  the later ones did have
the olds 350 and were either th350-based 3sp or iirc th200-4r-based
4sp.  they are all b-o-p pattern.

these do have the advantage [1] of sitting the engine over the axle
with the tranny alongside, but adapting them to the navarro engine
wouldn't be any easier than a corvette c5 t56 transaxle.

one nit with the th400-based unit - the diff has planetary spider
gears, for space reasons.  side effect - unequal torque split l/r.  i
don't know what sort of diff the later transaxles used.

afaik this was just another nova knockoff.

advance adapters has a ring which bolts to an amc v8 or late six and
takes both chevy and b-o-p automatics, but the navarro turbo engine is
based on a 199.  aa also has a gm-pattern bellhousing - for v8s and
late sixes.  it even has a cps hole for use with 4.0s.

dunno about the hydramatic, but the jeep th400 used a buick 'nailhead'
case which -did-not- have a b-o-p pattern.  forget about that adapter.

t56 transaxle thoughts: how long is the input shaft?  it can't be one
piece all the way to the engine, can it?  in any event, if it's long
enough it could be cut to amc t-10 length and splined.  [conversely,
if it's -short- enough, a splined stub could be attached]  then put
the transaxle guts into a warner aftermkt case with standard gm bolt
pattern.

why?  i have a rare [2] 'mexican' bellhousing for putting an amc t-10
behind a '60s six.  the odd thing is it's clearly way too deep for a
gm tranny, but it has the shape and meat in the right places for a gm
bolt pattern...  it's looking less and less like i'll ever get to use
it, so for the right price i might be persuaded to contribute it to
the project.  if a long input shaft could be fabricated for the t56,
this could work.

[1] the advantage is in wheelbase and overall length, but weight
distribution would undoubtedly be worse.  in a light car, much worse -
the engine and transaxle alone could be 1/3 of the car's total weight.

[2] rare?  mine is the only one i've ever heard of actually existing.

I have a chance to buy an 82 Eagle 4X4, 258, automatic
150Kplus miles on itfor $300.(has hail damage) The problem is that the tilt sterring is really loose and the guy did not know what to do to fix it. He has another tilt steering coloum for it, How hard is it to change on of these.
