I think I see what happened.

When I ordered the new manifold and carb from Jeg's, I asked for the
installation kit to go with it; they sent along gaskets, carb studs,
intake bolts, and so on. They sent a pair of regular, Felpro gaskets, so
we put those on and then started worrying about the valley pan.

They sent the wrong part, or at least the wrong part for my engine; the
valley pan won't line up properly because those gaskets aren't supposed
to be there. It's just the pan between the heads and the intake, right?

Well, there's a wasted morning. Heh.

I mentioned this on the badassgremlin group and showed them some photos of
it, though some of you might like to see this booger.

I went to my warehouse this morning to take some photos of parts and pick up
some crap to ship out, and on the way back, about a mile down I spotted this
huge ass Hummer limosine. It only has one front seat for the driver, the
other side filled with equpiment,a nd guess what? Bigger than crap is a
regular solenoid there found on all our AMCs, it was on a faux wall between
the back area and were seat would have been, boy, had lots of wires to it,
there were some amps there and some big hydralic hoses too, not sure what
all it was. So here are a few photos, it appeared the Hummer was in excess
of 40, YES FORTY, FEET long!

The valley pan/gasket is a bit tricky, but not complicated.

The gasket is stamped such that there is a little bit of steel
that will engage with the manifold bolt holes. It will *just
catch* enough to hold the gasket in place while you put the
manifold down onto it.

The problem is if you don't put it down perfectly flat and
square at once, the manifold bumps the gasket, it looses its
grip and >boing< it pops up.

I think the current trick technology is to put some gasket cement
on the heads, apply the gasket, temporarily instal bolts and
spacers to hold the gasket down, allow to dry overnight. Now
it won't pop off during installation.

Some V8 actual expert should correct me if I'm wrong.

PS: you will have nightmare oil consumption problems if you do
not use the valley gasket!

Thanks to the aide of list members, the Charity AMX is moving! John Widiker will be taking over "on-site coordinator" duties while the car as at his shop in Auburn Hills, MI. He's going to look over the car and finish it if he feels he can. I'm reserving saying more than that until he sees the car and determines exactly what is needed. Jack Barncord is planning on picking up the car and transporting to John. I'm reimbursing him for expenses from the funds I still have reserved for the car. John may be asking the list for help later.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Dave DeLabio for seeing that the body work got done to the car. It's in primer and ready for paint, will need just a little block sanding and touch-up before color is sprayed on. There was a bit more body work than anticipated, and it took longer than expected, but everything has turned out for the best. Zion Auto Body did a great job!

With any luck this car will get completed over the winter and be auctioned early in 2007!

Hey, a couple of other less comlicated replacements
can be found from the Jeep World.

The most common is the Weber 2Bbl Carb... normally
$250+ on Ebay, but a great replacement carb.. not a
simple carb to tune/build, but good.

My favorite.. the Motorcraft 2Bbl 2100 series. Look
for one with a "1.08" venturi size, which is stamped
in the circle on the side of the fuel bowl. These are
FABULOUS replacements, as long as your car already
runs well. Many rebuild kits use Cheap, nasty Power
Valves that blow easily, however, you can use Holley P
Valve and Jets for tuning if you can't find a quality
M-craft rebuild kit. CHEAP if you can find them (used
on lots of Ford I-6 and 302's)! The larger "1.21" was
used on the 360 Jeeps.

Also Holley 2 Bbl (350) is good, but can be pricey
since dirt track guys often have to use them. Tune
just like a Holley 4 Bbl.

The Holley 390 4 Bbl is nice for street use also,
though might as well change intake. These work great
with Header/Intake/Cam mods.

Let us know what you choose and how you like it!
THese are all made easier with manual trannies. NO
MATTER WHAT, DO NOT RUN A CHRYCO/AMC TRANS WITHOUT
PROPER DOWNSHIFT LINKAGE (TV ADJUSTMENT)! You will
burn your tranny as soon as you hit the street!

Frank,
Based on what appeared to be about a 99.9% approval for getting the car back
to Tom Benvie ASAP, to finish for the BJ auction in Scottsdale this coming
January, you seem to have made an almost unilateral decision to do the
opposite.?. I'm sure you've had dialogue with Mr. Benvie about this in the
last couple of days, so I'm anxious (as I'm sure others are) to hear his
comments (from him). If he is on-board with this latest news, then I guess
all is good.

"
" The rotation for the front axle is the same as for the rear. The
" transfer case is chain driven over to the side, so the front driveshaft
" rotates the same as the crankshaft. You can't put the engine in the
" middle facing back and run an angled drivesahft to the front. But nice
" try!

but you could do something like take a front axle, pull the tubes off,
and flip the chuck over before pressing the tubes back in...

iirc built-in caster/camber would prevent flipping the entire axle.

" A Corvair transaxle (uses SBC pattern) or some front drive transaxle
" (Premier ZF auto?) might work, but would require an adapter.

the transaxle doesn't have an sbc pattern directly, but kitcar
builders found out early on how to modify it for front input. someone
[crown iirc] then went on to make a sbc adapter. the setup was used
in fiberglass porsche 917 knockoffs, for one.

" The offset for a Jeep front axle is about 8", but I can't say for sure.
" If you figured out how to run the trans on the front of the engine you
" could always use rear axle alxes (hmmm... doesn't sound right, but you
" know what I mean!) and center the diff in the front.

just use two short-side front axles and trim the long side tube to
match. hitch is, if the diff is now 8" offset this would narrow the
axle by 16" - probably too much unless you're planning a single seater
and maybe even then.

" Or leave it offset
" and run through a transfer case. There are some front drive car haulers
" made from 4x4 trucks and car trailers. The truck frame is cut off just
" behind the cab and a low trailer frame welded to the back. The front
" axle does all the pulling, the rear output is sealed in some manner. I
" haven't had a close enough look to see how it's sealed -- just sticking
" a yoke in won't work, something has to keep it there!

3 little words for ya - slip yoke eliminator!

I went to a local car show today and on the way home I had to turn on my
headlights due to the time of day. I had high beams, but when i hit the
dimmer switch, I lost my headlights altogether. Perhaps a bad connection on
my dimmer switch? Has anyone experienced this before? My car is a '66
American.

Probably the switch itself.
Sometimes when you go from high to low or vice wersa both elements in both lamps fire at once while the switch changes over high to low. That high surge smokes a weak switch.
I addes relays to mine. Lights are much brighter now!

I saw a Pikes peak racecar built once. They used a transaxle set with the engine set front to rear and ran one side of the transaxle to the front and the other to the rear.
Limited slip axles in the transaxle and front and rear axles.
I don't remember much more about it than that. How to adpat this to the AMC six is another question as it was never mated to a fornt drive.
  Have fun!
