An update to my overheating 401.  I finally was able to determine that my custom 8 core (old technology copper core) radiator was not cooling, even though two shops said it was flowing.  Turns out that a infrared heat detection gun ws the answer.  I used it with a friend as the car warmed up and could see that only the top six inches of the cross flow radiator was working, the rest was dead cold.

I determined that I needed an aluminum radiator upgrade to keeps my cars road racing modifications consistent and here is how it has worked out so far.  I decided to buy a Griffin custom aluminum racing radiator 27.5 wide and 15.5 tall.  This is a two core aluminum radiator with 1.25 inch diameter tubes.  This is an off the shelf standard racing radiator size and sells for $300.  I ask Griffin to replace the inlet and outlets with an-20 fittings and it cost and extra $20, so new aluminum radiator for $320.  I did have to have brackets welded to it to fit into the radiator support brakets and for this size my support brakets in the car had to be trimed back a bit.  This radiator is cross flow and long and short as opposed to the factory AMX radiators that tend to be tall and narrow.

I've had a custom radiator outlet made, again with an-20 fitting and NASCAR style bleeder valve and have had my aluminum water pump also modified for -20 lines.

The AN lines will be expensive but the whole project will provide me an endurance quality road racing cooling system for about the cost of some custom radiators alone.

An additional benefit of this setup is that my old large copper unit weighed in at over 40lbs, the new Griffin only 25lbs.

I'll post the results once I get the lines made up and start her up again.

I trailered home an 83 Spirit GT a few weeks ago, I guess the Hawgshed couldn't stay empty for too long.  The odometer is showing 68 thousand and change.  She's been tucked away in the PO's garage since he bought it in 02.  He had plans, but motivation isn't his strong suit and to his credit he figured that out and sold the car.
 
I guess it's a typical GT, 258 2V, 4 speed, twingrip, PS, manual brakes, turbine wheels w/AMC centers intact.  Frost white with black interior, no radio and a butchered radio bezel.
 
Three of the four tires were suffering from side wall splits.  I never remember seeing this kind of failure and now it seems to be the failure of choice.  Poor material is my thought on the subject.  I worked at the Kelly Springfield Tire Plant for a few years back in what seems like another life now and I can't imagine workmanship entering into this type of failure.  Our tires today have a defined life span, not only in wear, but in time.  I just learned this the hard way on my wife's Mountaineer.  The tires are five years old now and this spring one decided to have a side wall fail.  Hey, no problem the spare has never been on the ground.  That spare lasted 2000 miles and failed in an identical side wall split.  Goodyear's comment was, "Its out of warrantee, can we sell you a new tire?"  I guess this is a word of warning, tires have a shelf life, use 'em or loose 'em.  Anyway, one of my other projects came with a good pair of 215/70R14 so they went on the back.  There was !
 one new
 tire, brand new, on the left rear.  I purchased a match to that one, 205/70R14, mounted it on the remaining wheel and voila she's on the ground again and rolling.  Sorry I haven't sent you any pictures Doc, but the resto on the wheels was delayed.  I will send them when I get started.
 
I may be repeating my self, but the driver's outside door handle was broken.  The 71 Hornet parts car donated one of its two LH handles and that's working nicely now.  I need to order a pin and bushings for the lower hinge on that door, it drops about an inch as you swing it open.  At least it will open from the outside now, that's a step in the right direction.  These door handles cross 18 years of use with finish being the only difference I can see.  An interesting point, the door proudly displays a Ziebart sticker, but the drivers front fender has rust issues.
 
I had to disassemble the glove box to get it open, it was locked and the PO didn't get the round key when he bought the car so he couldn't pass it on.  Inside was the usual stuff, owner's manual, insurance papers and service records/receipts.  The service records shows that the engine and brakes have had a checkered past with many drivability issues.  Those will get sorted out as the project progresses.
 
Last night I dropped in a battery, just for grins and giggles.  Opened the driver's door, gee that's a nice handle, and the interior lights came on, that's promising.  The engine oil was on the full mark so let's see if I can get oil pressure with the starter.  It took about 30 seconds of cranking, but the oil light went off.  Okay, Houston, we have oil pressure.  A little slosh of gas in the carb, she started and ran for the duration of the fuel.  Amp gage went to +30 so the charging system is intact and functional.  
 
She sounds a little rude with no exhaust system.  The PO gave me a new front pipe, muffler and tail pipe.  He said in passing, "You'll have to have that small pipe made I guess.  They didn't show one available."  I checked it out, he was probably referring to the catalytic converter.
 
Under the hood is a mass of vacuum lines some going places others just laying there open.  Hopefully the diagram in the engine compartment covers this well enough to get things back where they belong.
 
On another subject, still no response on my Carter YF high idle question.

I would like to thank the list for offers on used center drag link, but as I 
am putting the built 343 into the 79 AMX, I would prefer a new one, anyone 
know where I can get one.  The 343 is pounding out a dyno tested 385 HP with 
the potential of much more if I fine tune.  I want to make one run this year 
hoping to hit the 12"s with it.  Interesting in Duluth big car show, 3 
blocks long, and just one AMC.  I also need a 79 concord donor for my 
concord electric car, no rust 491 actual miles on it, but need windsheild, 
and trim parts as making into show car.
Always enjoy the knowledge of the group.

I?m reminded that my 70 Hornet lived in Milwaukee for 35 years before finding its place in my garage.  After 11 years of storage and now back on the road the car is making some familiar noises.  Not necessarily good noises either.  I?m hearing what I think is pinion bearing noise.  Not too surprising since over the course of 11 year there could have been some oxidation of the upper half of the bearings and now they're complaining.
 
Next is the gas tank.  I was under the back end adjusting the brakes while on my lunch break and noticed that the gas tank is sweating in a spot about 4? in diameter.  Not enough to drip, just enough to ?sweat? a dark spot.  Now as standard equipment I carry a gallon of gas in the trunk waiting to run the tank dry.  I need to take a look at the fuel gage sending unit anyway so I?ll take the tank down and hopefully do the repair right.  It has been recommended that I use a tank sealer.  Anyone have any thoughts on this?  

As for the gage, it shows full until you get down to about 4 gallons and then the gage comes down like ?normal? with four gallons being full, three being about three quarters and so on.  Any thoughts on this one?
 
Does anyone remember how to trim the antenna on these AM radios?  As I remember you tune to a weak station around 1600 and adjust the trim for the best reception.
 
Headlights, I was working at the hometown Ford dealer when halogen headlights started showing up in new cars.  Now, I have read a lot of chatter here about this subject, but it seems to me that you all have it backwards.  As I recall, and by the way that doesn?t mean a darn thing, the halogen lights were much more expensive to replace, but like radial tires once you had them you didn?t want to do without them.  BUT, being from a farm town populated by retired farmers that weren?t too excited about the replacement price the worry was as follows:  Farmer Brown buys a new car with halogen head lights.  His wife backs the old car into the new car and breaks one of the head lights.  Ole Mr. Brown goes to Farm & Fleet, asks for a head light and they give him a halogen replacement.  He gets to the checkout and sees the price is three times what a regular sealed beam costs and decides to buy a standard sealed beam bulb.  He goes home thinking everything is right with the world.  He !

s the new sealed beam himself because remember he?s cheap and the first time he drives the car at night the wiring harness on that side turns into a melted mass.  Now that?s the really long way to say that halogen lights give more light for less.  Sealed beam lighting circuits are of heavier gage wire so you can put halogen lights in older cars, but not old cheap sealed beams in newer cars.  That is how I remember it, I could be wrong.  By the way the ole home town is Forreston or For Rest Town, it?s a sleepy little burg.

 Looking at the aerial, the streets are angled. Come
down the street on the right, from the top
intersection, 3rd house, 2nd from the corner house, on
the left side, white roof, is my house and garage. The
orangish spot you see between them is my '78 Gremlin
GT. Out front, you can see a black vehicle, that's my
Toyota, the shadow to the upper left of it, near the
house corner, is my '79 Pacer. You can't see the other
AMCs due to the tree shadows on the driveway, but
there's about 4 more there. Luckily the COunty can't
see-em either. LOL. Well, one agent DID see them, but
I've gotten no more letters from them, so I guess
they're satisfied at the moment. 
 Anyway, that's my northern VA AMC enclave. See ya,

Eh, seemed like we just went thru this a month ago. Unfortunately, where i
am at just west of Sam Houston Tollway and north of I-10 on the west side
had a "bullseye" and got hammered today with about 7 inches of rain. The
photo 865 shows my Eagles on a nice quiet, summer day, and photo 729 shows
the water coming up quickly. Only got about water up to front tires on the
Rebel and SC/360 in the garage whihc surprised me. But not a whole lot of
places anywhere can withstand 2 inches a hour.

Part of the problem is I-10 under construction which is basically a dam
south of me, and until finished, I guess problems like this with excessive
rainfall. Spent the better part of the day raking stuff from the ditch
holes! You know it is a flooding rain when you find dead snakes and dead
crawdads. Takes a lot of water to kill crawdads. But water is receding now,
the kids had fun it in, and chances are ya'll will probably see scenes like
this on news later, quite a mess across almost whole city. And possibly more
to come,

It shows Doppler estimates or rainfall. It is STILL full ditches, and slowly 
draining off. Biggest problem is I-10 under construction is like a big dam 
right now. I drove around tonight and there is a huge ditch that used to be 
where the Igloo factory was at corner of I-10 and Beltway 8 and it is at 
least 2 football fields wide and 20+ feet deep right now, a big Lake Ten I

I posted some pics on the badassgremlin site. Those AMC Eagles are built 
really tough I may add, barrel right thru high water and even can pull high 
dollar brand X SUVs out of ditches and push them to safety......

      1981 Eagle SX/4. 258 4spd. and 1979 Concord 258 Auto. 
      Both cars are using GM style alternators. 
       
      The 1979 Concord. Turn the key to the on position the idiot light (IL) is off. 
      Start the car and the IL is off. Alternator is not charging. (Pulled the posivtive cable off and the car dies.)  I rev the engine to about 1500rpm the IL comes on 
      and the system is charging. As long as the IL is lit the system Charges. 
      The orange and red small wires are hooked up to the alternator. 
       
      The Eagle SX/4 is essentialy the same except I have to Rev the Engine around 2500 RPM to bring the IL on. 
       
      The concord was sitting for a while and then the symtons happened upon start up. 
      The SX/4  was  Sitting for about a year. When first started about 3 weeks ago 
      The charging worked fine. Last week  The IL problem surfaced. 
      There is some corrosion present in the Fuse block. 
       
       
      Any suggestions.
