oh yes, i know that.  i recall seeing a t5 parts list and crossing the
amc cluster to an s-10 usage though, and iirc the t-bird might've been

I will be going to the National, and I planning on selling several AMX items.

Fiberglass 68 headliner un-painted

Mufflers and pipes typically rot from the inside.

The clamps are not the problem and welds really do not hold up any better!

You can't avoid condensation with temperature!

I CA the temperature is much more constant so little or no condensation...

I Boston, lots of temperature change that can take place over a few hours!  I have personally walked
into a cool barn on a hot/humid day that was loaded with cars only to see moisture condensation all
over them!

This is why folks store cars in climate controlled environments!

Also, one of the byproducts of gasoline combustion is H2O...

This is one of those east coast/west coast things; here in CA
pretty much no one I know messes with those pre-formed tailpipe
parts; you just go to a muffler shop that bends the stuff up on
the spot, all welded.  My 258 six Hornet, done last spring, cost
under $200 (I supplied the Summit muffler). Took an hour, it's
bigger than stock and a hell of a lot fewer bends and no flats.

When I lived in the Boston area, (left there in 1984...) muffler
shops had dozens of those pre-bent pipes with swaged ends hanging
all over the walls, all held together with those crappy clamps.
If I remember right, bending tubing was not common.

Could be just old warped memory though.

The irony of all this is, with all the road salt the welded
system would work a lot better; water wouldn't creep into the
stupid clamed joints. ANd the clamp-together stuff would last
a hell of a lot longer in CA, with anti-seize, you probably
COULD take it apart later!

Except for actual restoration, why does anyone mess with those
annoying and rare parts?

I realize this, I was mainly concerned with the parts themselves;
why buy, when you can build?

Though I do remember loose and rattley exhausts, rotating
mufflers from loose clamps, etc. Welded I think is better there.

But I sure wish I had one of those porcelain Rambler exhaust
systems! Nice!

I actually have several used sets from a 68 AMX that are still in usable shape!

AMC was way ahead of its time with porcelain pipes...

 Can anyone tell me the difference in a V8 and 6 cylinder Engine K-member in 
a 1977 Hornet AMX? Also, I will be Parting out a 1976 Gremlin X in a few 
days. It was a 6 with a 3 speed on the column. No ENGINE OR TRANNY. Factory 
air, grill decent, clutch pedals, Z bar ,etc. Contact if interested. I will

Car 1977 Gremlin X

I twisted a REAR wheel stud off tonight trying to
remove the lug nut.  I have not yet removed the brake
drum.  I think I know the answer, but I'll ask anyway:
Can I install a new stud without removing the rear hub
on that side?

Also, does anyone have a good close-up photo of the
front of a 1977 Gremlin X?  Were the grille and
headlight buckets silver? or silver and black?

 So, you've never visited an AMC dealership, since
most have closed ( all you say? Nay! ), but now you
have the chance, at least at the seat of your
computer. Here's the link, and how to get to see it.

1) Type or copy the above link, it should take you to
Pikeville, NC map ( if you have dial-up, I pity you! )

2) Once at the map, click on the Satellite link box in
the right corner of the map ( 3 button boxes there,
middle is Satellite, between Map and Hybrid)

3) Once the aerial map loads, you can click on the
left vertical adjustment bar to the 2nd thin line from
the top, the first gives you an error. 

4) NOW you're getting to the juicy stuff! You should
be at the center of town, a green arrow in the middle
of the picture. Two vertical features, railroad line
on the left, and a 2-lane road on the right, Rt. 117 (
green arrow just to left of road ).

5) Hold down the left mouse button, and shove the
picture UP, keeping the road to the right in view.
You'll go about 1/3 of a mile "down" (south), scale (
ha ha , figure it out! ). Go down until you see a
single big building on the right in a brownish field,
big parking lot, whitish roof. Now STOP. ( you can
also click on Hybrid, and see Rt. 117, and go down to
Booker St. NW, the AMCs start just below that road.)

6) Look on the left side of the road. You should see a
lot with trees, vegetation, and lots of rectangularish
dots and a few buildings. THAT is the Pikeville, AMC
dealership owned by the Cooper brothers. Neat, huh?

7) Now for a quick tour. Assuming that the cars are
still there, I'll let you look for these cars listed
below ( good luck spotting them ).Find the front gate
pull-in by the road , this is your reference point.
Now to find :

red/white/blue Javelin - go straight in from gate( to
the left on the screen), to the slanted shadowed area,
car is about 100 feet in, was barely visible from
gate. 

gold-green 390 Ram Air '70 Javelin - take a left at
the gate, go to the building, it was in the lower
right corner area, just in front of the building
corner.

blue 343 Javelin with black vinyl top - close to the
above 390 Ram Air car, I think closer to the gate. 

Matador Coupe, either Cassini or Brougham, two-tone
gold or red? - along the front fence line by the road,
about halfway down from the gate to the building. 

purple and gold Gremlin X - take a left thru the gate
towards the building ( down on the screen ), you can
just see a line of reddish cars about 20 feet from the
gate blocking the driveway - it's right there. 

Eagles , Jeeps, etc. - top fence line, go right inside
the gate to the fence ( straight up on PC screen), all
the newer stuff is there. 

white Gremlin, outside lot, extreme upper left corner
to the left of the twin line of trees - by the
railroad tracks, outside the main lot, with other,
about 20? , amc cars, some Ramblers. Most still have
KEYS in them! no one bothers them. Or didn't when I
visited a few years ago. 

 Well, that's the quick n' dirty Pikeville, NC AMC
dealership tour. It's on Rt. 117 , near Goldsboro, NC.
If you've never been by there, is an amazing ( but sad
) sight to see. Lots of AMC metal there wasting away.
Wish I could spend a few months there just exploring
the entire lot! It's so overgrown, no telling what's
in there. Wonder if the two Cooper brothers even have
a reliable inventory of what's there? It'd be
interesting to see all of it ( winter would be best,
with bugs and snakes down for the season ). Ah, well,
wishful thinking. 
 So,now you can see there IS still a small AMC oasis
in existance, tattered, torn, and terrible-looking,
but existing nontheless. Hope you enjoyed the free
show. All for now,

Well, K-member eh? Actually Ray that I associate with a Chrysler term,
they actually use a K member. In AMC land that is usually just called a
cross member, or engine cross member. I'm not sure whether that is
opposite of a happy member or not though. Ok, bad joke. 
As the cross member serves to mount the end of the lower control arms
and performs two functions the two cross members are identical. With one
exception. The 6 cylinder cross member has 6 cylinder motor mounts
welded to it while the V8 cross member has 8 cylinder motor mounts
welded to it. 
To the best of my knowledge there are no separately available engine
mounts to weld on to a cross member although I think aftermarket may
have had them at one time or another. 
Thus the only way you can mount a V8 in your AMC car is to have a V8
cross member available. 
But BEWARE! 
I have heard of a number of occasions in the last couple of years where
our most famous trading store E-Bay and others have featured for sale a
questionable V8 cross member. All you have to do is bid some ridiculous
price for this part and then obtain engine mounts and weld them on to
the cross member. Remember, V8 engine mounts are made from unobtainium.
Also you can make your own questionable V8 cross member by removing the
6 cylinder cross member from a 6 cylinder I6 car and cut off the 6
cylinder engine mounts, grind everything smooth and then paint it. 
The end result is just as useful and a whole lot cheaper. 
To the best of my knowledge, Gremlin, Hornet, Concord and Spirit cross
members are interchangeable. 
I thought that I had reference to Javelin/AMX cross members as to
whether they interchanged too, but I can not find it. Maybe some one
else has this information.

It shouldn't be too hard; if you can drive out the old broken
stub.  There should be enough room to tip the new stud into
the hole from behind but you might have to tak all the brake
guts off one half.

The drums are off the AMC15 rear on my parts car; I can measure
the distance to the backing plate if it would help. 73 Hornet.

It's certainly easier to drive the stud into place with a hammer
and shaped anvil, but the last few mils should be done with a
lugnut and spacer, so you could pull the stud in with a nugnut
and spacer or stack of washers. Lube the hell out of the threads,
use a sacrificial nut -- which are softer than the studs.

Tighten the HELL out of the stud to seat it, back off the nut
often, add lube often. 100 ft/lbs? ought to seat it all the way.
Toss the lug nut when done is what Id' do.
