Bryan,

If the warning light comes on when then #1 terminal (this is either brown 
or white on GM cars, not sure what color AMC used) on the alternator is 
grounded (make sure you unplug the connector from the alternator before 
grounding) and the ignition is on, the alternator is bad. If the light 
doesn't come on, either the bulb is bad or the circuit is open. Since you 
can rev the car and get the light to come on, the problem is likely the 
alternator is bad.
