Re: swing outs - Comments from a new Gremlin Time Member

Hello all, I'm fairly new to this group. Been reading it for awhile,
but only just got my membership approved so I can post.

Anyway in regards to the swing open rear side windows... I had a '72
Gremlin X 304 / 3 speed some years ago that had them. The '72 was
the first year for those windows according to all of the AMC product
brochures I have. There are two different mounting styles of windows.
The '72, '73 style and the '74 and later. Since buying my current
Gremlin last year, I wanted to put those windows in it. My '73
Gremlin X has the fixed windows. I picked up a set with all of the
hardware and weatherstripping. When I compared the mounts to the
service manual I discovered that they were from a later model
Gremlin, not a '73 or earlier. I can use them, but I'd have to drill
holes into the body to mount them and I'm not going to do that. The
earlier style has a 'bracket' for lack of a better term, on the
leading edge of the window that has three (I think that's right)
scalloped cut outs that have holes in them to screw to the window
post. The 'bracket' then flexes to allow the window to open. The
later model windows have a stud that pivots and goes thru the window
post and bolts to it. There is also an upper post that goes into the
upper window frame of the body that the window swings on. Either
way, to install these windows you need not only the windows and
hardware but you also need the associated weatherstripping as the
window sealed by laying against the weatherstripping with a tight
fit. Finding decent stripping is difficult at best. It's not
reproduced.

All of this being said, I would like to trade my '74 and later swing
out windows, hardware, and weatherstripping for a '73 and earlier
set. Must be complete. If anyone's interested, please email me back
directly.

If I can figure out how to post pictures to your photos site, I'll
post some pics of my Gremie X. This is a great site. I have a car
show story or two I'd like to share sometime with everyone also.
