Re: [BaadAssGremlins] Am I Insane or Lucky?

Todd mentions below the 904, 998 series trannies. My 68 Rebel convertible
"Machine" has a 71 LAPD policia 401 engine in it I dropped in it in 1987.
The trans is a 904 light duty torqueflite. Something of note here is that is
has had no problems taking the torque from the 401 thru the years, with only
one rebuild. Some of the miles I have put on this car are 1/4 mile at a
time; it currently has 127,000 miles on it.

The 904 and 998 are excellent "low end" transmissions, they wind up real
QUICK. The 727 may be better, even more indestructable perhaps, but the
904/998 serers are equally indestructable. You can find a LOT of speed stuff
for the 904/998 at 1/2 the price of 727 same; like 3000 stalls, modified
valve bodies, shift kits. Go look at shift kits for them all over ebay for
instance.

The 727 has all sorts of great 'upgrades' also; and my 72 AMX 360/727 would
chirp tires at 70mph for instance, quite impressive for 3400 lb car. The
904/998 series were used on AMC 258-6 and 304s; the 360s and 401s got the
727. Both really good trannies however.

One thing on the light duty ones; if they sit, for a extended perooid of
time (like someone not driving car) the bands rust and disentrigrate; then
you lose drive and reverse gear. I had a little 72 Gremlin here I bought and
it didn't have 3rd/reverse but we drove it all over place for 2
years......in 2nd gear, just stayed off freeways and below 50mph. Paige
would sometimes forget and got stuck at Taco Bell in parking space when she
pulled in and could not back out for instance. I don't remember why I didn't
ever get that trans rebuilt, as have a good trans guy here in Houston that
will completely go thru them for $500. Might be because I bought the Gremlin
for $200, don't remember, ended up selling it for $750, sure was a solid,
rustfree little car however and really dependable, even with no
drive/reverse!

I would recommend getting on my VENDORS list and contacting, call, don't
email, John donato at Donato's Engineering, as he is a specialist for 30
something years on 727s, and 90s and 998s, including interchanges, so I
would suggest talk to him first, then decide what you want to do. Take care
and good luck,
