Hi glad to be of some help, and sorry for slow reply i get 20-50 emails a 
day here so it is AMC FEMA line to say least. No 78 shop manuals in stock, 
those are three piece, just like 1977. for some reason AMC split the manuals 
into three books for only 77 and 78 then went back to one book for 79 until 
the end. I have never seen a 88 shop manual and would like one if one of you 
ever come across one. Sorry to hear ya'll get punished for SF area smog, it 
is easier to blame others for failure to clean up one's own shit, we see 
that here in Houston as sometimes we beat out LA for top smog city in US. 
Not lately, just every now and then. Lately it is pollen, and mold spores, 
so you have to change filters (including your AMCs) as they are all bungled 
up with yellow shit pollen this happens Sept/Oct and usually in Mar/Apr 
again. Good luck with your car and let us all know if Guv Ahnahld inspects 
your car.
