Charlie I had no problem getting mechanical parts from my local non-chain auto parts store. The only mechanical parts I had to go to an AMC supplier for was a fuel tank sender and a Delco alt kit conversion. Do you have a Motorola alt in your car? 74 was the last year for that piece of crap. I now have a nice 100 amp Delco in my orange Hornet. Six cyl models with power steering have huge bracket and steering box clearance issues to install a Delco, but between me and my friend we over came them. Since you don't have A/C and have a V8, Kennedy American makes a nice kit to install a Delco. My son just put one on his 72 V8 Javelin. The interior was my big problem since it was originally a Florida car and it was just cooked. I got door and hatch gaskets, door window track felt, window fuzzes from Kennedy American and also the so called formed carpet kit which took forever to make fit. I got original seat insert material from a place in Oregon. Luckily my friend was parting out an old base model Gremlin Con Edison fleet car and gave me a bunch of the plastic interior parts I needed. All the rest of the interior parts I had to hunt for all over the country. Between here and the AMX files I was given, bought and put onto people that had what I needed. Like I say part of building a nice car is the hunt for that one elusive part you need to finish the project. I laugh at these car shows on TV where the truck pulls in with 10,000$ worth of repo parts and all they basically do is assemble the car except for rust repair and paint. Hey Doc,I understand what you mean about AMC parts. I lost count of the number of NOS/OEM parts I got by watching eBay closely over the last two years. Thankfully, I am the original owner of my Gremmie w/40k miles on it and did not need much. However, lots of things faded, cracked from the sun, etc. I noticed that the Chevy, Ford and Mopar folks can get just about anything any time if they have the money. As for making parts, that's way beyond my skill base. Wonderful that you can do that!CharlieIn a message dated 6/11/2006 2:09:36 PM Eastern Daylight Time, AMC74HORNET@xxxxxxxxx writes:Charlie it feels good to drive somthing other than the usual cookie
cutter cars that if your wallet is fat enough you can order any repo
part you may need. Part of the thrill of driving an AMC is the hunt for
the parts you need. I spent 2 1/2 years hunting the parts I needed to
re-do my interior. I have parts in the interior from all over the lower
48 state and a few exterior parts from both ends of Canada. The owner of
the shop where I work on my car and does work I am no longer able is
building a modified 69 Firebird with a built 400 small block Chevy
engine. He is not interested in the hunt for parts, he just want's to
open a catalog and give his credit card no# and expect's the parts in
3-5 days. There a a few small repo parts in my interior other than the
carpet but the majority is used parts refurbished or made newparts by me
and new upholstery on the seats.
