Thanks for the tips. I did not lose everything however, just a huge chunk.I worked 2 and 3 jobs at a time for 15 years, doing without niceties, saving for my older years and it looks like I lost that.. I live in east Tenn., have a real nice house and a nice pension so all is not bleak. I will start over and try again. I lost about $1.2 million in beach front condos that I owned. I bought them in the late 80's and early 90's when they didn't cost nearly that much.I was going to retire and move to one of the condos and use the others as my income.I went ahead and retired, had my house for sale when hurricane hit. I owed $320,000 on the property. I only had $110,000 in savings, so I took all my savings, refinanced my house, sold all my projects and parts cars to pay off the debt. I still owe Uncle Sam $10,000 because they estimated my potential income from the properties and charged me that. (how can you make an income for condos that are non-existent now?)

I wasnt eligible for any grants, government loans, Red Cross etc. because property did not have flood insurance (not offered for beach front) and I made too much money.....We have to give the money to the minorities and the poor. Those that dont pay any tax get big breaks . I averaged paying between $43,000 and $60,000 in taxes a year from 1988-2005.......sooo I lose.

The one thing I would worry about is alot of those Katrina evacuees are people of the criminal element.Houston will change and maybe for the worse because of that.

Houston was always a choice for me. I was an air traffic controller for 27 years and started to go to George Bush Intercontinental and work just before I retired but Roxanne wanted the beach and I was burnt out so I retired........Now I may go to UTI and learn how to do bodywork and engine repair (located by George Bush airport)....cars are my only true love.....lol......see ya....eddie

Houston is still being called 'home' to over 140,000 estimated Katrina refugees, not sure how many Rita refs however. Still lots of help from organizations like Red Cross, Salvation Army, Catholic charities to name just handful trying to get people like you and others who lost everything, including family, back on their feet; the sooner the better.
