I agree they should have fit. As far as your fix went I think it is just
fine. I have used the red rubber hardware stores sell in bulk for a lot
on things, for shim's, gaskets and for other things. I believe it is
internally re-enforced and it's original use was for plumbing gaskets on
large pipe flanges. As far as the 3 leaf spring versus the 4 leaf the 4
leaf will ride  slightly harder but will be hardly noticeable. Also when
the springs settle the car's ride height will not drop much. I also used
a HD Monroe Gas shock. I like the little harder ride and the better
handling. Does your car have a front sway bar? Mine didn't so I added a
new HD V8 one from I can't remember who now 2 years ago. I was told by
the instructor at the AARP 55 Alive driving course I took for a better
insurance rate that I was an aggressive driver. Being one and having a
car that handles is a priority for me. Is your car  6 or V8? Mine is a
6.

Doc, I did get all new bushings, shackles and u-bolts.  The bushings
I got were the OEM rubber, not the urethane ones.  My car had the 3
leaf springs, and I purchased their 4 leaf standard ones, if that
makes a difference.  But even still, their bushings should have
fit.  What do you think of my fix?  I figured that since the rubber
is encased in the leaf's eyelet, it should be ok.
