I had the exact same problem with a 77 Gremlin. Turned out to be the  
Pickup Coil. This is a pretty common problem I think. At first the  
car will stall. Eventually, it will nearly be impossible to start the  
car. It is really annoying as it is an intermittent problem that  
happens with no apparent problem.
