If the vinal on your door panels is still good you may be able to just glue it to a new card board backing to keep the original interior look. I can't say for sure if it will work as I have never tried it, but you may have to try it as I doubt weather you can find decent original ones. For me it was a no brainer as my panels backing, vinal and all were severely water damaged and besides I am making the interior black. That tan it is right now is just not my color. Black will go much better with the orange body in my opinion. "Doc" ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor --------------------~--> Help save the life of a child. I am trying to keep the factory pannels.Davis
AMC74HORNET@xxxxxxxxx wrote:I buy the cardboard backing for 12$ a sheet from my local auto upholster
supplier. I'd say it is about a 3'X4' sheet. To make all the new panels
for a hatchback takes 5 sheets. Both the door panels were severely water
damaged and practically crumbled when I removed them. The material cost
to do the hatch panel came to 122$. The biggest part of the material
cost was 80$ for 100 buttons.
I worked on the panel on and off all day saturday. It was cold and damp
out and my arthritis was killing me so I was not working to fast. Today
I will continue. I figure it will be done by monday afternoon. I'll
start next on the hatch area panels. From the factory they were just
colored cardboard.

Doc,That is awsome you are able to do your interior like that. I have tried to find someone local to fix my door pannels but they just say it can't be done. They need new cardboard backing.Davis

After taking my orange car out for a quick drive yesterday to get my AMC
fix I started to complete the backing for the first new upholstery
panel. I had already cut the backing to size and laid out the pattern
for the buttons for the diamond design. It just needed a little tweaking
to get it ready for the upholstery today. I don't know why I saved the
pattern I made 3-4 years ago when I made one or my yellow car but I am
glad I did now. I called my upholstery material supplier to see if the
other 500 buttons for the rest of the interior were in yet but they were
not. Today I will add the material to the backing using 3M general trim
adhesive. It is black vinal with 1/4" of foam already attached. That is
the easy part. Once that is done then comes the hard part adding the 60
buttons to the panel. This is where I use those washers I was grinding
down last week. I should have it completed by monday at the latest. I
stopped by my friends shop friday to see about installing the panel for
me next week but he was closed, strange for a friday and no sign in the
window as to why. Since I am changing the color of the interior from tan
to black I need him to paint the inner side of the hatch black before we
install the custom hatch panel. He was having some permit problems a he
just moved into this new building 10 day's ago. I hope the moron's
didn't close him up for some stupid little thing. I was just there
tuesday when he installed the door popper in the hatch and he was open
wednesday when I drove past on my way home from the VA hospital
appointment. The roads were dry and clean yesterday but today we are in
for another wintery mix to rain event getting warmer for the next 3-4
days. Have a good day all.
