Re: [BaadAssGremlins] Car Craft 74' Grem, 70'390, 904, amc 20 pump gas running 7.42's on reringed 390!

Davis and everyone,       They make you wear helmets when you pass the 8.50 mark.  But the track has had some deadly accidents many years ago.  The track use to be a 1/4 mile track but people would not be able to slow down due to the fact that there was a short time to slow down before you ran in to a river on the end of the track.  I don't know exactly what happened or how many people died there because it was a short track but due to the accident or accidents that happened they converted it to a 1/8th mile.  But they are lose on the rules and i can agree that it is only a matter of time til some one gets hurt or worse.
Today my dad's car didn't do as i thought.  We ran 7.50's, instead of the 7.40's we ran last time.  And it started to lose power on the last run.  It blew the Oil cap off, so he is experiancing bad blow by.  We have a bad feeling that it could be a cracked piston, but we are not for sure what it could be.  We didn't notice any horrible noises or knocking but it just isn't right.  What would cause the Oil Cap to Blow off on a pass down the track? Does anyone know what has happened?

That's awsome. But that track is just looking for a lawsuit. NHRA has rules to save lives. I expect some people don't like to wear helmets but they save lives and it is part of racing. Souds like a tragety waiting to happen. Show your Dad the pics of our gremlin and ask if he thinks it is impossible for him to hit a small part left on the track and blow out a tire?
I look forward to your report tonight

I saw that mangled up gremlin, that was a nice car.  Now it is good for a couple parts.  Did the Herman Lewis motor survive?  We have never ran the quarter but a 7.42 equals a 11.50 on a drag racing chart. Oh yeah i forgot to tell you that my dad has everything on the car for a/c and plans to put it on in the summer.  He has everything on the car except the compressor.  He also has a back seat and like you said we are with out a cage, but my dad doesn't like them.  The dragstrip we go to is Brainard Optimist near the tennesse, georgia line.  They don't enforce the rollcage unless you are running for money.  We are going to the track today, we should run a faster time because we had 6 cylinders leaking compression. Also my dad was in a rush to take the car last time and put a metal exhast gasket in sideways that hurt the flow on the #8 cylinder badly.  So i expect the car to pick up a tenth, but you can never tell til you run it again, so i am crossing my fingers for a 7.30's.  The car feels like it is running faster.  We are running the car with a 6-AL with the 6000 chip in it.
Tell yall how it went when we get back this evening!  Try to borrow a digital cam from a friend to take some pics.  By the way the car got the Silver award at the Atlanta regional's last year.  Our car looks like Donnie's car on Gremlinx.com but BBO.

Jade,
 P.S.
I looked at my slips I ran 8.085 in the 1/8th. If you are running 11.50 you will need a roll bar if your track goes by NHRA safety rules. If you want to know why you need a roll bar look at the pics under Bill's Amc Team Gremlin the 74 BBO in the pic section. I added an 8 pt cage before I made one run in my 72

running 7.42's on reringed 390!

Davis,
My dad has a real nice 74' amc gremlin that is Big Bad Orange with replacement hockey stripes from phonix,  He just ran it at the drag strip and we ran a 7.42 at 91mph in the 1/8th , which is about a 11.50 with two blow head gaskets, on a basically rebuilt 70' 390 that we did a red neck port and polish job, left the stock valves in it, stock crank, rods, even the original cast pistons, we just reringed and put new bearings in it, put a hyd. comp cam with .541 lift, a old torker, Scorpion roller rockers, we took a 750 DP and put a proform bowl in with big jets.  The car looks bad ass.  We have Drag lites with Drag radials BF goods on the rear and skinney's on the front.  The body is all stock with a roof rack, Rechromed bumpers, tinted windows and the 401 emblems like on the Javelins and amx's on the front finders.  The interior is Black with redone white seats it is all stock other than the Hurst Shifter and the Grant steering wheel, this car is Old school.  The suspension is stock, with Cal Tracks, which is a great suspension for less than $350, we are running a factory amc 20 with a spool and 410 gears,  The trans is a 904, with a Reverse manual valve body, a tci pan, and a tci 3,500 stall.  We got the 390 for $300 and built it very cheap, we probably have less than 2500 in the motor.
We replaced the head gaskets, it was running on only two sealed off cylinders, 6 cylinders were leaking compression and blowing antifreeze and we still ran a 7.42 Also we are taking the car back to the dragstrip tomorrow with the problem fixed, so we should run faster. I think that it is the perfect car to show in car craft for a cheap 11 second car that is street driven, How many chevy or ford guys have less than 2500 in there motor, running mid 11's in the quarter.  I am going to try to get some very good pics of the car a the track tommorow so i am going to try to post them.  This car is no trailer queen, but is one of the nicest cars you will see at a drag strip and it always draws a crowd at the car shows and at the track.

Okay, here's a bit of 'narrowing-the-field' for you
folks. The Car Craft rep I've been dealing with is
the same gent that just did the article in the Feb

Most of the submissions I've received thus far have
been stock or street-driven mild mods. Doug is
seeking cars more heavily modified as he describes in
the two notes below...

"I am looking for modified and fast AMC's that are able
to run on the street. 10s or 11s with stock interior
and interesting paint and wheels. <snip> I've been the
yards for the last 3 days to pull a 360 for a motor
build. I am looking for combinations from reader's,
do you know any builders/readers that have a stout 360?"
I've emailed Car Craft seeing if they wanted to do a story on my buddys tubbed 74 9 sec Gremlin its street legal but i guess their more interested in either non tubbed or the same tired shit 54 inch rimmed novas >:(
