faced fiberglass is not the ideal insulator, unfaced works much better and
costs less. faced provides convenience. now that you've installed it, I
suggest you puff it down below the face of the bottom chord of the rafters
just a bit, cover it with 4 mil poly and then install 5/8 sheetrock. Metal
is more expensive and cannot be patched or repainted easily. The goal is to
have the fiberglass itself in substantial contact with the vapor barrier.
When the vapor barrier is in contact with the insulatin, the moisutre vapor
tends to diffuse upward through the insualtion and disperse out through the
attic ventilation, instead of freezing at any air pockets near the vapor
barrier. you do have attic ventilation don't you? Don't forget to install
"wind wash barriers" between the rafters on the outside of the wall above
the top plate. This will prevent the air from moving horizontally through
the fiberglass and negating its insualting value exactly as the exterior
wall sheathing and cladding does. remember to install any flame producing
heat sources (furnace) at least 18 inches above the floor to prevent
ignition of fumes.
living in MN teaches you how to insulate a building. Insualtion is probably
the most important thing after structure and life safety, as the building
can be forever effcient and safe or leaky, moldy and costly to heat.
