Thanks to Armand and others,

I do have good ventilation with Styrofoam soffet vent "troughs" and roof vents. I can honestly say, my attic is a "COLD" zone. I will start working on the walls today and then the plastic. I have all but given up the metal ceiling idea now and will likely go with drywall all around. Lots of work, but the results will be worth it in the long run. Thanks again for the sound advice.

faced fiberglass is not the ideal insulator, unfaced works much better and
osts less. faced provides convenience. now that you've installed it, I
uggest you puff it down below the face of the bottom chord of the rafters
ust a bit, cover it with 4 mil poly and then install 5/8 sheetrock. Metal
s more expensive and cannot be patched or repainted easily. The goal is to
ave the fiberglass itself in substantial contact with the vapor barrier.
hen the vapor barrier is in contact with the insulatin, the moisutre vapor
ends to diffuse upward through the insualtion and disperse out through the
ttic ventilation, instead of freezing at any air pockets near the vapor
arrier. you do have attic ventilation don't you? Don't forget to install
wind wash barriers" between the rafters on the outside of the wall above
he top plate. This will prevent the air from moving horizontally through
he fiberglass and negating its insualting value exactly as the exterior
all sheathing and cladding does. remember to install any flame producing
eat sources (furnace) at least 18 inches above the floor to prevent
gnition of fumes.

 AMCers,


 I know some of you have built garages to house and work on your AMC
rojects and I need your advice. My garage is built (24 x 24) and I am in
he process of insulating it now. I have the ceiling near done with R-25
raft-faced fiberglass. I plan to cover this with some sort of metal
aterial similar to siding used on pole barns, etc. My question
s.........should I cover the insulation with a plastic vapor barrier or is
he paper good enough to avoid condensation on the metal from the heat
ource. FYI, I live in central Illinois.

 If you have done something similar, I'd like to hear your comments, either
ro or con, and how satisfied you are with the warmth of your own garage.
