Type A was originally whale-oil based.  I do not believe any of the **modern** Type A fluids have any whale component like that any more.  Dexron II and III are suitable replacements for Type A whale oil fluid.  While they don't have identical slipperiness compared to the original (affects shift harshness and shift speed), they are similar enough that most of us won't notice much difference.

Ford Type F is stickier than Dexrons.  While the Borg-Warner M34- through -44, as well as M-8 through -12 are basically Ford-O-Matics, Ford used different valve bodies and clutch material, among other things.
