I've heard the term and the same story. Never heard of a failure on any actual bias rims used with radial tires. 
   If it truly bothers you. Well, you will have to buy a set of wheels that are newer and made for radials.

What sort of notches?  My 67 Marlin has had radials on it for years and they are
fine.
