I agree with Bruce. I love going to car shows, but I also love seeing peoples daily drivers and talk to them about what they have done to their car. I think there is a lot missing when There is a pretty car, but no story behind it. Or rather the story is so and so did the body, motor, paint, etc. I would like to see more magazines that tell the tales like mine. I dont have a lot of money. I work on my car on weekends to make sure I can make it to work. I like talking to other car people about what I am doing, comparing notes, getting advice. I think this is a good idea for a column.. I regular article.. now we just need a publisher! Thanks for voicing what I believe so many of us would like to see.. Have subscribed for a while, and when I let my subscription lapse - I pick it up at the bookstore. I don't know if it's just me - but it seems that there is more emphasis on full classics, 100% restorations and original cars. Articles also seem to be more of an attitude I don't like. I would be perfectly happy with bunches of articles on young drivers and their Fox-bodied Mustangs. After all - young drivers should be supported, and if they start with an accessible, affordable car - that's fine by me. I'm also not sure I really care about whitewalls or no whitewalls, whether something is factory installed, or if it is period correct, or if it is period incorrect - won't win a car show - but makes it so you can actually drive and enjoy the car. I don't know. I want to see more articles on people keeping their old cars on the road and running. I want to read articles about cars like Tom's 440H and Classic wagon. Cars like wrambler's '69 American. Like Franks '63 wagon. Like Joe's '65 - getting closer and closer to being on the road. I want to see articles about regular guys and gals working on their own cars and using them. If they go for a weber carb or a Pertronix ignition to help driveability - fine! I really enjoyed the post on theamcforum with the guy that drove his '62 Classic from Oklahoma out to California. Cool, epic trip. I want to see articles about people getting in their own old car and going somewhere. Taking pictures. Having fun. Maybe visiting actual honest-to-gawd diners or independent motels along the way. I don't want to read another article about concours quality restorations of full classic pieces of art. I want to read about Tom and friends cruising the desert. Heck, I'd like to take a run across 10, or maybe visit some local historic routes myself. So - are there magazines out there about regular guys (and girls) with basic daily driver and fun cruiser cars hitting the scenic highways, stopping at old diners, wandering by the few drive-ins still around? I don't really care if they have white walls and the correct amount of overspray or not. Heck - I'd like to see articles on actual folks using a mig welder to install patch panels, or getting out the spray gun to fix a rust spot, or simply doing basic maintenance on an old car. Folks finding the parts for their cars, then getting dirty fixing their cars. Doesn't have to be brand-specific. I like all sorts of cars. Doesn't have to be show quality. But should be about something the driver gets in and happily drives. ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2010 12:48:33 -0700 From: Jim Blair <carnuck@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: "amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx" <amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [AMC-list] Amc 15 for '82 Spirit $100 obo Message-ID: <SNT114-W269447E1F15DC4D65FDCD9ACC00@xxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" In North Seattle. I wouldn't be so hard on Hemmings Classic Car.? Of course we?all have our own opinions and there might be some things that don't appeal to us, but it has to be the most interesting rag out there for the average old car fan.??I often pull out old issues of the magazine and re-read articles before?bedtime.??? ? The "Driveable Dream" articles are always interesting.? Jeff Koch and Jim Donnelly are two of the best writers in the business right now IMHO.? And Dan Stroehl I think has put his brand on the magazine and has done some great work.? Of course Pat Foster focuses on the Independents and AMC gets it's share of print largely due to his input.? And I learn something from almost every Ray Bohacz column. ? They have announced that they will include classic trucks in the mag now and that pleases me greatly.? They could include tractors too, for all I care. ? You make?a good point though about road trips and modified cars.? I think their editorial team has the savvy to do?such stories with great skill.??The?"true classics" guys though might get upset by such stories and threaten to drop their subscriptions like they did when HCC started covering 70s cars, like some of our AMCs and the Pinto for example.? It's hard to please everyone.? ? And.... you could also submit road trip articles to the AMC forum.? We'd love to see pics of your beagle with his nose out the window.? I've met Tom J.s dogs and I can imagine how much they like to ride.? You could submit pictures of your paint repair and learning to use a spray gun.? ? I've been holding back... Not only do we have an HCC writer on this list, HCC has been a good magazine; a bit limited range for my tastes (each his/her own of course) but the latest changes in direction are utterly counter to my interests. But ME TOO. It's a class thing. I'm sure business reality is that they serve the noisiest readers, and they probably want more reminscing about when-they-were-kids and full classics etc. There's a lot of grouchy readers it seems. Personally, while I love to look at people's restored *cars*, restorations are incredibly boring to *read about*. A NOS bezel is pretty enough, but it's really uninteresting to read about, or hear about it's acquisition or installation. Here's the built-in problem with restoration articles: YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THE OUTCOME IS. Worse, though, nearly all are gross OVER-restorations. I've been griping to my local friends that I want an AGNOSTIC car magazine. HOT ROD is boring, and worse -- I love and drive American cars only, but come on, the criticism against that guy who put a 1000hp turbo import motor in a Camaro last year was borderline racist. Sheesh, the guy does an interesting, well-thought-out and very well executed install, and he's called Un American and worse. Is there any car rag where people actually MAKE things? I know they gotta sell Edelbrock ads, but come on. How many people can afford to drop a few K$ for a weekend project, never mind $10K+ for some undrivable monstrosity? There's no diversity of engines or chassis. The "import" rags are as bad, or worse, just product product product. And not everything has to be 1000hp or even have 8 holes. I mean seriously, it's 2010, not 1960, making HP, especially in a '350 or something, is so routine as to be utterly predictable. > I don't know. I want to see more articles on people keeping their old > cars on the road and running. yeah, even HCC had a column about 'yes, old cars CAN be driven reliably'. Hell, you could drive a 64 Classic 60 mph all day long in 1964, why not in 2010? But a lot of people are fine with their cars as summer weekend cars, and that's totally fine too. Everyone has their own desires. For weekend use, shiny paint and old leaky engines is fine. To their credit HOT ROD has been emphasizing ability to drive 1000hp monsters (usually by spending uncountable dollars) but too many HCC articles have body-off restos and "engine looked fine so we repainted it". Bulls**t. I know what 50 year old engines look like inside, no amount of care will stop all corrosion and wear. > I want to read articles about cars like > Tom's 440H and Classic wagon. It was standard for 232, 287, and 327 autos actually. Oddly the 287 with "Shift Command" (three speed auto with now common P-R-N-D-2-1 shift instead of normal Rambler P-R-N-D2-D1-L) got a 2.87 axle in 65, all others 3:15. The only other gearset used with the 327 was 3.54 with all stick trannys (three speed, 3+OD, and Twin-Stick). 3.54 isn't even listed as optional for the autos. So you can be fairly certain it's a 3:15, just have to look at the diff and see if it's a Twin-Grip, so the cover has to come off. None of the ratios share the same number of teeth on the ring gear, so just count those (11/39 for 3.54, 13/41 for 3.15, 15/43 is 2.87). If you come up with something different I'll check 63/4/6 TSMs. The tube and shaft come off as a unit. The braces bolt onto the tube, are riveted to the axle. Just take the nuts off the studs around the pinion area of the axle and pull the tube off with the shaft in it. The braces then pivot parallel to the axle. The shaft might take a good bit of a tug to get off, it's been on there quite a while! --------------- Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2010 12:46:52 +0000 From:wrambler242@xxxxxxxxxxx There's all the details I was looking for! I was hoping to get a clean easy identity on it, oh well, probably have to open it and get a firm identity on it. Would love to find 3:15 twin grip in this one. It was a drum front brake car. So redoing its brakes should be fairly off the shelf and easy. Plus it can be cleaned up and gone through with pulling the convs existing axle. I am correct that the Tube, drive shaft and diagonals can be pulled off fairly easily to reduce it foot print for storage? Correct? I'm beginning to think the only truly hotrodding that is going on any more is the rat rod movement. Let's face it, almost anyone can drop any late model GM engine in virtually anything with all bolt on parts it seems these days. GM is so grossly over done that there no longer appears to be any challenge remaining in building anything GM. You can buy and bolt on any part for them you need. The magazines all over do the GM stuff in my opinion. Hemmings Muscle machines is just a little better than what you guys are describing in the Classics magazine. At least they seem to regularly have articles on things other than "factory" style restorations. Car Craft is doing a pretty good job of diversifying their articles and car brands. I'm not sure I will resubscribe to Hot Rod, although I will say the last issue had a little better coverage. It had a story on a Pontiac engine build and how to fix rust & replace floor boards. All pretty good. Ah, heck ya just never know, maybe next issue of Hot Rod will be dedicated solely to AMC. After all they did print that article about the Toyota powered Camaro that Tom mentioned. Even though they managed to over emphasize their dislike for the combo, they printed it anyway.
