I think you can get most of the important effect -- getting hot head water
to open the thermostat early -- by drilling a 3/16" hole in the thermostat,
and positioning it towards the radiator. You can tell if it's working really
easy -- with a cold but warming engine, is the thermostat pod getting warm?

A 1/8" hole isn't enough. It might take 1/4" to do the trick.
