Depends. 
Some had a resistor wire. 
Some had a resistor. 
Some coils have the resistance built into them. 

Each person needs to figure out what should be in the car. The big deal is What is in it now and what does my planned system need?

....and I thought the resistir was to keep the (stock)coil from overheating when
running. The resistor is bypassed when starting to get full spark but it can't
handle 12volts all the time.
