Re: [AMC-list] 1979 AMC FREON?

The local AC shop can either make the hoses, order them from a local maker, or tell you where to get them made. They may be fine. If you're concerned about the AC charge talk to the local shops and ask about replacements for R-12. Freeze-12 is a popular one and is a blend of several refrigerants. It's supposed to be equal to R-12 as far as cooling capacity. Many systems will cool as good with R-134a as R-12, but as I noted -- it depends on just how close to "just enough" the system was to begin with. I'd think that AMC engineers took into account the huge glass area on the Pacer and added AC capacity accordingly. Also depends on where you are and expect to be driving in the summer. If the temps routinely get over 100°, the system may not be adequate. I had an under dash unit in my car that worked fine until outside temps got over 95-100°, then it was "better than nothing" -- had R-134a in it. It was a "one size fits all" and the interior volume of my wagon was just too much for it. The 63 factory unit is much better, but I'm running Freeze-12 just to make sure. You can google Freeze-12 for some info. It's what most of the AC shops use to replace R-12.

Frank, that is definately something I worry about in a car that glassy! It will need all the help it can get cooling off inside! I will do some more research and make some calls and see what I can find out. My hoses look like brand new though! I have traced all of them and I see no dry rot at all! If they are though, where would I ever find them!?
