Re: [AMC-list] 1979 AMC FREON?

I just had hoses made. Took the original hoses to a local shop along with the new stuff and told them I needed them to fit.Flare fittings on the evaporator, O-ring on the under hood stuff. There wasn't a hose size problem -- I don't know why, as I do recall that the old flare fitting stuff usually has a different size hose between the evaporator and condenser than newer models -- the older is one size smaller than new? Anyway, no hose size adapter was needed. The shop either had a flare end for the new style or o-ring end for the old that fit everything. The expansion valve on mine was good, but Vintage Air and Southern Air both use a similar expansion valve. Replacements are available, but the hose end might be o-ring instead of flare on the replacements.

I didn't know that! How'd you work out the plumbing? Is it all flare fittings?

I tried to mix flare and O-ring to do more or less what you have but
ended up buying a VintageAir under dash unit. Then I had no problems
with the different hose and fitting size issues.

(It's a long boring story, but basically the valve on my evaporator
was bust, the suction hose required weird adapters anyways, and the
underdash unit solved all that.)

I have the underdash guts for a 63/64 CLassic/Ambo if anyone wants it
cheap. Needs a new expansion valve, but the core doesn't leak at all.
