Well, it may not be THE trick, but it is one. 
A simple formula will convert the tooth count (assuming a 904/998/727 with 13
teeth on the drive gear cut in the tailshaft) and differential ratio to a driven
tooth count (also assuming the speedometer wants 1,000 rpm cable speed for 60 mph).

Also note that the calculated tire circumference (based on tire size numbers)
will probably not directly convert to the actual rotations per mile. I've seen
the RPMs vary quite a bit for tires that are supposedly the same size.
