Re: [AMC-list] SoCal TT!

Sounds like the stock umbrellas! They are kind of hard, just a shield to deflect most of the oil away from the guide/valve junction. Some gets sucked in. Newer AMC six seals (well, 4.0L anyway) are positive type also -- sort of like a mini front seal. The top of the old guides could be machined for them if they weren't bad enough to require replacing. Just need to be cut down the right diameter, and maybe a groove to retain the seal? I forget exactly how they mount. Definitely a good thing you did there!!

My machinist managed to fit GM seals to it. Yeah, those umbrellas were
likely the problem. I forget if he put new guides in or not (you think I'd
remember that). The seals that came with the head gasket kit were very
stiff, by design or age I dunno. I threw them out.

Guides in mine must have had a lot more wear in them than I thought.[....]I
think I had the old hard umbrella seals too, but not sure you can get newer
type seals for the 196, not without machining or replacing the guides.
