My machinist managed to fit GM seals to it. Yeah, those umbrellas were
likely the problem. I forget if he put new guides in or not (you think I'd
remember that). The seals that came with the head gasket kit were very
stiff, by design or age I dunno. I threw them out.

My motor seeps a bit around the pan, and the rear seal is drippy
(quarter-sized spot every morning). But otherwise it uses no oil ever, I do
changes at 3000 mi. (due to the lack of filtration) and I've not added a
quart 'tween changes in two years.

One of the old-timer mechanics on the rally recognized the shortblock as a
well-known rebuilder of long ago. "Havent seen a (brand) rebuild since
forever!" Forgot the name. I'll get it from him again. Block is painted gold
and has a tag riveted to it.

I think I can say at this point that motor is OK and it's time to stop
worrying about it.
