Guides in mine must have had a lot more wear in them than I thought. Mine never misted any oil out the filler, but then it was using a bit when pushed hard. I'd have used at least a quarter of a quart (probably closer to a half) driving like you did for 250 miles. I think I had the old hard umbrella seals too, but not sure you can get newer type seals for the 196, not without machining or replacing the guides. New type guides should be finished on the top for positive seals...even if you have to use Chevy guides that would be the way to go if the guides ever needed replacing.

Wrong on the oil though -- didn't use a drop! I just checked this morning.
I changed it on Friday though. Still yellow. It did mist the inner fender
next to the filler (always does). I really want to build a cleaner engine,
and baffle that filler neck.
