While it won't snap your neck or anything, the 232 in any AMC ought to be
snappy enough to easily keep up in modern freeway traffic.

Tune up everything. If it's smokey or consuming oil it might be plain wore
out, check compression for that.  If any of the following haven't been
severely looked at in a year, they're all suspects: carb, distributor, plugs
and wires, and every single hose under the hood (every one). Hoses go bad
and are critical components. Cheap and easy to replace too. Carbs are pricey
these days, but call it a engine fuel management analog computer system and
it will feel a lot better when you buy one from nationalcarburetor.com for
$150.
