Never happened! The big old Dual-Range Hyramatic was used around 54-57 though. The fellow may just be confused. A lot of people think they have two speed trannys when what they have is the BW three speed. The little 1 and 2 on each side of the D confuses many. It's understandable, the old trannys don't work like those made since the later 60s. 

The old Hydramatic used a separate bell housing, and I'm pretty sure the early Powerglides did too. Maybe they used the same bell and someone made a swap?

'58's had a "flash-o-matic" option... Torque-command later, got up to 
'72 and didn't
find mention of gm autos...  this would be a good question for jim blair...
