Oh, Tom, J can support! The black goo of death gets everywhere! Once it hardens on the valve stems, well, there go some pushrods....and a general valve cleaning and start over. I surmise from what I see that if, one was able to get a car running and go through a tank of gas without shutting it off while the fuel concentration of old gas is high, one may be able to avoid the black goo....maybe... I've just been through the cleaning-out-digusting-gas-tank-goo routine with the resurrection of my '63 Ambo, and what came with it was *carb* problems. Specifically, the gunk was sticking the float bowl needle valve shut, and killing the motor due to starvation. A not very pleasant situation out on the highway. I'd be very surprised if that stuff made it as far as the valves without first creating other problems elsewhere.
