On the Ford style direct drive starters (without solenoid on the starter) it's not really necessary to unhook the battery, although it is good practice for most beginner mechanics. Since there is no power in the battery cable except when the key engages the fender mounted solenoid, it makes no difference.

Pulling a starter from an AMC is pretty easy. Remember to disconnect the
battery first.
Try to determine if the shaft rotates easily or not. If there is too much
slop. shot bushings.
If there is a lot of gunk and you are not a starter guy, get a rebuilt.
otherwise take it apart, clean it, install
new bushings undercut the mica on the commutator a bit, etcetera, (brushes
sometimes if alot of miles on car) put it back together and install/try it.
Like Davis said let us know what cures it.
