Re: [Amc-list] world's slowest engine rebuild

I know you are very anal about pictures, labels etc,
Just don't lose any parts!

At a 1/4 turn every 25 years or so that would make it what?
One RPC? (revolution per century)

Sounds like it held up well, all things considered!

If it was back here in the land of corrosion it would be scrap by now!

Of course I totally forgot Frank's pedigree article in AMC! Duh!

So there's a big Nash six with 7 mains, but it's a boat anchor. THe
amc 195.6 was the best/latest flathead with an OHV stuck on it. Though
it's 4 mains it's got the best of all of them.

Not that it matters, since nothing else fits in the hole (little AMerican).

ANyways.

I got the "new" motor fully apart. Man was it stuck!! (It was a "NOS
rebuilt" short block I got from eBay last year, .040 over strapped to
a pallet and never run.) Pistons and crank come out OK. Most of the
lube turned gluey, and some of it turned into almost dry stuff like
dried honey. The crank journals were shiny like new clean mercury.
Most of the bearings were the same, but a couple of uppers are dull
grey. #5 had a small embedment, I don't think the crank made more
than one revolution. I added 1/4 rev to get the pistons out.

The cam would not only not turn, but I had to make a puller to get it
out! The lube fully hardened. I made an extractor from a 3.1" brake
caliper piston (same one I use to do suspensions -- useful tool!) No
damage though just stuck.

THere's a puzzling feature on the block -- a welch plug on the carb
side of the block down low, that goes into the crankcase. There's a
milled flat, hole, boss, and tapped hole, like a distributor mount
(but it's not). I'll photo it later and RTFM the TSM and parts
catalog. Unimportant, but interesting.
