Oh you have it right -- the jaws will leave a slight scar on the nut. Most of it can be filed down, but I was more concerned with the driveshaft staying on than it looking pretty! You have the right idea. You can probably get by leaving one wrench alone and propping it on the floor (put a 6" or so square of 3/4" plywood or 2x6 block between wrench and floor to spread the load). May as well cut the other off for a cheater pipe before you even start.
