I have recently put a 'later' transmission into a '65..
Here is the fun stuff I ran into...
The torque converters on the early (65) and later (??up) are different such
that they are NOT interchangeable without first changing the input shaft of
the transmission.
(I wanted to use the newer converter along with the bell housing...BUT...the
bell housing of the new transmission would NOT fit into the '65 without
cutting a hole into the floor boards to compensate for the 'design' thingies
on the bellhousing which added height to it (making it not fit into the
original 'hole').  That's why I changed the torque converter...the later one
would not fit into the earlier bell housing.  So I changed the input shaft
on the later transmission using the earlier one so I could use the torque
converter which was that which fit into the bell housing (earlier one) which
was the only one which would fit into the '65.
Then came the driveshaft.
After swearing, cussing, banging, busting, and removing the dammed
transmission for the FORTH time it was clear there was a small difference
(about the same amount of difference in the input shaft to the torque
converter) which precluded the driveshaft's yoke (from the '65) from fitting
the later tranny.  Consider that the early driveshaft has that nutty-nut on
the rear of it (instead of a slide in yoke or a nice U-joint held into place
by mounts, the early shaft has that dumb-assed nut affair which goes the
wrong way to go the right way ...)
Therefore, all I had to do was cut the front yoke off a later shaft, cut the
original from the '65's and weld them back together.
So...which bellhousing do you plan to use?
It MUST be an 'early' one since from '68 (I believe..maybe '67) does NOT fit
into the Bell Housing's  spot under the hood without some serious crunching.
For a job as simple as "this tranny will bolt right into your '65", I
suppose I did get something out of it (other than a really 'young' milage
wise tranny)...I got an education.

i have the very rare 'mexican' bellhousing needed to hook an amc t10
to a pre-'72 six.  i don't know if i'm ready to part with it just
yet...  there is no bell i know of for an sr4/t4/t5 on these motors.

several of us think it's possible to make an adapter plate for the
stock '60s bell to take a '90s mustang 3.8 t5.  the business part
would end up being about 2/3" thick.  throwout bearing and clutch disk
would be stock late '70s amc t150 3sp parts; the pilot bushing might
work too.

did you get the t14 and driveshaft from the jav?  they'd slip into the
american with a '67-9 non-big-nut rear end, and at least you'd have a
full synchro tranny.
