Great news Bruce! You're actually going about this the right way -- make sure it's SAFE before it even moves. Most people will get something like this running first THEN worry about the brakes. I have to admit to doing the same thing, usually because I wanted to know if it was worth putting any more effort into though. I won't try to drive one unless I can check the brakes and such out in a safe area first. Some people just assume they should work.

My oldest son and I replaced the master cylinder and bled the brakes today. We now have brakes!!! The car actually stops and everything! We have some work to do to make it go, but now we know it will stop. Cool.
