Re: [Amc-list] Found out why my '65 American was parked!

You don't need any special tools to replace the front hub grease seal. It just pops out and a new one can be tapped in. Remove and clean the bearings real good in a solvent, then grease them before reinstalling. You can buy a tool for greasing the wheel bearings, but if you don't mind getting your hands real greasy just do it by hand. Messy, but if you don't plan on doing a lot of them it's fine. You just need to spend a few minutes pressing the grease into the bearings. This is usually done by putting a "gob" of grease in one palm then pressing the bearing roller side into it, working around a couple times until you're confident plenty grease is in there. Then coat the outside of the bearing with grease and stick it in. No seal on the outside, just the inside.

You can get straight lengths of brake line up to 5' in length with ends already on it from any parts store. Use a coupling to put two or more lines together. To run from front to back usually takes two of them. Do get a tubing bender, but that's all you need. Just remember not to make the bends very fast or sharp. If it looks like the tubing is starting to flatten you're either going to fast or bending to sharp. If you're planning on a 100% restoration I think In-Line Tube makes the lines. Just order lines for an SC/Rambler if they don't have your car listed. All the American/Rogue/SC lines are pretty much the same.

Okay, I decided to work on the front brakes today. The previous owner stated that the car pulled hard to the side when braking. It was dangerous - so they parked it (they had someone lined up to repair it - he passed away, so they just left it as is).

Anyway - the right front hub is leaking grease all over the place. Looks like it needs seals. I'm weighing buying the tools and doing it, or chickening out and just getting it done. Anyway - gotta finish the driver's side brakes, replace the master cylinder - then start reading the TSM to figure out what to do about grease all over the place.

On a different note - anyone have experience with pre-cut brake lines? Does American parts depot carry them? Or anyone else? I'm trying to decide between using pre-cut (if available) or coughing up cash for the tool set and trying to make some.
