Typically, on a 74 and up bridge over rocker style head, as long as the rockers are paired together, meaning they still have the bridge or some other equivalent, a guide plate is not needed.  If you are going to run that same head (has larger round push-rod holes) with a screw in stud and non paired rocker with each rocker running on it's own, you will need guide plates and will need to machine the perch down to except them.  If you are running a pre-bridge over style screw in stud head and the push-rod holes have not been altered (still flat on the sides) again no guide plate are needed.  If you are going to run guide plates with this style head, the holes will need to be opened up.

Hi All,
  When running guide plates for roller rockers on AMC heads, does the casting around the center two push rod holes get milled/ground down?  I see that it sticks up above the stud emboss and was wondering?  Or are there offset guide plates that will clear the casting?
  
  Conversely, do guide plates have to be run with street use, or with the earlier stud-rocker heads that have the smaller pushrod holes?
