Re: [Amc-list] Towing Capability - 1960 Classic 6

I'm assuming you're talking about 1500 pounds TOTAL weight -- trailer and load? With the manual trans lock it out of OD (pull handle out) and you should be fine. Considering that the brakes on the 62 aren't up to current driver's expectations, trailer brakes are a great idea, though not necessarily required. The trailer towing guide for 59-62 cars states:
"As a general rule, the total trailer weight should not exceed the total curb weight of the pulling car in the interest of safety and suitable handling qualities. Also, the fore and aft weight distribution of the loaded trailer should be in proper balance in relation to the trailer wheels and to the vertical load on the hitch for the type of trailer and hitch used."
That means in 62 AMC recommended max gross weight to be towed by a Classic 6 was around 3000 pounds (shipping weights averaged 2850).

Will a 196ci, 3-speed manual with o/d, be practical for towing a 1500#
trailer (with trailer brakes of course)? I'd think not, but I've been asked to
ask the experts. :-)
