Re: [Amc-list] 304 Gremlin

One of my High School friends ordered a new Gremlin from "Bob Rayl" Motors
in my hometown. It had a 304 V-8 and a torque flight transmission. I wish I
could remember for sure which year the car was. I don't recall he had the
car more than a year or so before drinking set in and he sold it for a less
expensive ride. Any way where I'm going with this story is, I think the car
had maybe 3.54 gears or something, because that car would just wax the hind
end of my 70 304 Javelin with 2.87s off the line. Neither car had much wheel
spin, but after maybe half track and staying within striking distance the
old Javvy would catch and pass the Gremmie and then accelerate away with
more top end. If that Gremmie would have had the additional horsepower of a
70 304 versus I assume a 72, 73 or 74 304, I don't think my Jav would have
stood a chance. The TF transmission in the Gremmie was obviously much better
than the BW 3 speed automatic in the Jav. The Jav would sort of vibrate
hesitate at the line but really go no where until it got some steam behind
it, then it came on OK. Those were some fun days.

> In July 71 when I was ordering our first allocation of 72's the AMC car
ordering guide showed a 304 option for the Gremlin (this was the first time
they released any info about it to the dealers). I ordered a Trans-am red,
gold striped, red/black interior GX w/ auto, H-D suspension, 3.15 gear and
RWL Goodyears and crossed my fingers that the 304 wasn't a misprint. It
arrived the 1st of Sept. I took it as my demo, drove it for 6 months, what a
blast! The only ID was the 5.0 emblem and 99% of the public had no idea....
Had it for 6 months and ordered another odd Nash a 360 Sportabout X Copper
w/Gold X stripe. 72 was a great year for baby Nashs!
